In R. J. Pineiro's The Fall, a sci-fi thriller, a man jumps from the upper-most reaches of the atmosphere and vanishes, ending up on an alternate Earth where he died five years earlier.
Jack Taylor has always been an adrenaline junkie. As a federal contractor, he does dangerous jobs for the government that fall out of the realm of the SEALS and the Marines. And this next job is right up his alley. Jack has been assigned to test an orbital jump and if it works, the United States government will have a new strategy against enemy countries.
Despite Jack's soaring career, his personal life is in shambles. He and his wife Angela are both workaholics and are on the verge of getting a divorce. But the night before his jump, Jack and Angela begin to rekindle their romance and their relationship holds promise for repair. Then comes the day of Jack's big jump. He doesn't burn up like some predicted―instead, he hits the speed of sound and disappears.
Jack wakes up in an alternate universe. One where he died during a mission five years earlier and where Angela is still madly in love with him. But in this world, his boss, Pete, has turned to the dark side, is working against him, and the government is now on his tail. Jack must return to his own world but the only way for him to do that is to perform another orbital jump. This time is more difficult though―no one wants to see him go.
Jack's adrenaline is contagious―The Fall will keep readers on the edges of their seats, waiting to find out what crazy stunt Jack will perform next and to learn the fate of this charming, daredevil hero.

Review
“It's a thrill-a-minute story, with good here-and-now technology, and a striking scientific premise at its heart.” ―Wall Street Journal
“R.J. Pineiro breaks the sound barrier with The Fall, one of the most original and electrifying science-based thrillers I have read in a long time. The opening chapter--the incredible "fall" itself--is mind-bending enough, but it only gets better, with cutting-edge science, vivid characters, and a plot that accelerates to a mind-warping climax. Highly recommended.” ―Douglas Preston, New York Times bestselling author of The Kraken Project
“Imaginative premise.” ―Publishers Weekly
“This alternate world sci-fi thriller is packed with high stakes and moves at a high speed.” ―Kirkus
“Packed with mystery, intrigue, physics, fight scenes, and a bit of romance - this story felt like a cross between a Lee Child thriller and hard science fiction.” ―Science Fiction Book Club
“Just about as well-executed an adventure-sci fi story as 2015 has seen so far, a first-rate thriller delivered by a seasoned pro. Last year had Andy Weir's The Martian; this year's clear torch-bearer is Pineiro's The Fall.” ―Open Letters Monthly
“Pineiro's tale toggles between the two worlds, each filled with cliffhanger thrills. But the best is saved for last - when Jack, carried by a weather balloon, evades missile fire from an F-22 Raptor and an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer to make a second daredevil drop wearing jury-rigged equipment. The reader, feeling the G-forces, is rendered breathless.” ―The Star Telegram
“If you're afraid of heights, you probably won't enjoy this novel. But for everyone else, there's plenty of adventure in Pineiro's other-worldly tale of Jack Taylor, a man who jumps from the upper part of the atmosphere and winds up on an alternate earth. While it's a concept based on pure adrenaline, The Fall's meat lies in Taylor weighing two worlds-and ultimately choosing his own reality.” ―Paste Magazine
“Jack's adrenaline is contagious - The Fall will keep readers on the edges of their seats, waiting to find out what crazy stunt Jack will perform next and to learn the fate of this charming, daredevil hero.” ―Forces of Geek

Good Action, Quick Read
By Spoon
Ex-SEAL Jack Taylor tests stuff that will be used by the military so that they get only the best for use in the field. While testing a new spacesuit allowing jumps from orbit to the latest hot-spot on the ground, something goes wrong, and Jack finds himself in a parallel Earth where his other self is dead. Jack is where he is because of a brutal, psychopathic Army general with a warped sense of what makes America great. Once Jack "disappears," it's his scientist/hacker wife who's left to pick up the pieces and try to get Jack back.
In the parallel world, Jack's on his own until he meets his wife's counterpart, who is REAL happy to have her dead husband back. Along with a separate bunch of bad guys, they work to get Jack back to his own world in order to protect the people of both.
Jack is an almost standard perfect soldier found in many military action novels; never misses a shot, the plan always works, and the force is always with him. Despite that, Jack is a likeable character that's easy to cheer for, and he does take on the occasional beating.
The book starts out well, getting the reader engaged for what's coming along later. The story moves fast between the two worlds as we learn whether Jack's "jump" was accidental or intentional and what the potential ramifications are. This is not high literature, but it's well-written and internally consistent. At the end, there's a little teaser that may lead to another book or sequel. If so, I'll likely buy it.

"Relax honey, I'll be right back"
By Claudia H
Jack Taylor makes a suborbital jump from 60 miles above earth, in the upper-most reaches of the atmosphere and vanishes; ending up on an alternate Earth where he died five years earlier. Each world has a version of his wife, Angela, and his best friend, Pete; the story alternates between worlds while following Jack in his effort to get back to his own universe.
Felix Baumgartner made a suborbital jump from 24 miles above the ground in October 2012; facts like this are utilized by the author to make the story feel realistic. Pineiro gives details that help the reader visualize and feel like they are in the moment. In the beginning some of the character descriptions were a bit frustrating to me, but once I got past that it, it was smooth sailing.
The story can be loosely compared to a TV show like “Fringe” with a bit of Liam Neeson’s character from “Taken”.
I was captivated by the book, I didn’t want to stop listening, and when I did, I would hypothesize about what would happen next. I suggest you take the fall with Jack Taylor into this fast-paced and realistic sci-fi thriller.

Two Wicked Good Stories In One!
By Robert Blake Whitehill
The Fall is a terrific book. I knew that when, out of curiosity, I checked my progress through the story on the Kindle. Only 20% through, I was crestfallen to have only 80% of this inventive, dynamic, well-researched story remaining ahead of me. I was already addicted, and anticipating withdrawal. The characters are multidimensional, smart, clever, and real. Female characters are diverse, strong, creative, and brilliant in their fields. The guys are fierce, dedicated, resilient, and leavened with a full range of genuine, believable emotions. No robotic killing machines here. The plot hummed! When (not if) this book is adapted into a feature film, it will have all the underpinning expertise and science of The Martian, but with the intriguing multiversial concepts of Inverse, and harrowing emotional wallop of Cape Fear. Frankly, in a collision of literary worlds, the hero of The Fall, Jack Taylor, would make a fantastic brother-in-arms of Ben Blackshaw, from my series of the same name. Higher praise I cannot give.
