Actress Pam St Clement, best known as EastEnders' Pat Butcher, shares her life story.
In January 2012, one of EastEnders' longest-serving and best-loved characters breathed her last when Pat Butcher succumbed to cancer. Her departure from the show gave actress Pam St Clement time to reflect, not only on almost 26 years playing a role that she loved, but also on her whole life.
Pam's mother died when she was a baby, leaving her with a father whose life didn't really have space for a child. What followed was an itinerant childhood, with various stepmothers and foster families, before an advertisement in The Lady took 11-year-old Pamela to the farm in Devon that was to become her true home, with the 'aunts' who became her surrogate parents.
Time on the farm at Dartmoor, where she discovered her love of animals, alternated with life at The Warren boarding school in West Sussex, where she discovered her passion for acting.
On leaving school, Pam was unsure of what direction to take but gradually realised that acting was what she wanted to do with her life. So, in 1966, Pam took up a place at drama school. Pam settled in London and worked on stage and television throughout the sixties and seventies, before her first appearance on EastEnders in 1986 and the offer of a permanent role a few months later.
This memoir is far more than simply an actor's tale. Quite apart from her fascinating and unique childhood, Pam also recalls her involvement in the women's movement of the 1970s, her lifelong love of animals and the worries about her weight that have dogged her since her teenage years. It is also a tribute to Pat Butcher, for whom Pam retains a huge affection.This incredibly warm memoir reveals the woman behind the popular EastEnders' character, a woman who, apart perhaps from her earrings, couldn't be more different from Pat.

East Enders is Not the Same Without Pat!

Pam St. Clement should have been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) like her fellow East Enders friends and colleagues, Wendy Richard, Barbara Windsor, and June Brown. She left the series in early 2012 and I am waiting to see her name on the Queen's Honours List yet.
This memoir is written in her words and sheds light on her personal and professional life. She is one of openly few bisexual women in the entertainment industry. Despite her size, she is a beautiful, talented, and intelligent woman. She doesn't bash or criticize others in her biography.
She writes candidly about her life and career. She is honest and forthcoming about her bisexuality. As expected, Pam is a complicated woman in real life.
For 25 years, she was Pat Butcher of Walford Square on BBC's East Enders. She was also an accomplished actress and entertainer. It was a career making role where she would be in the spotlight.
Ironically, Pam doesn't crave it and prefers life in the country to the city. She is a devout animal lover and activist. She was a gay rights activist and on the original UK commitee with Sir Ian McKellan and Michael Cashman. She was out as a bisexual long before anybody else. This book clears up rumors about her love life. There is only a mention of Diana as a female lover. Her ex husband Louis is not his name.
If she doesn't find true love and happiness with a man or woman, she has found unconditional love from her relationship with animals as the British Betty White.
I still miss Pat Butcher and the series hasn't been the same in years with only Adam Woodyatt and June Brown MBE left in the cast.

but I did take a look inside and I can see some pretty good photo's of Pam growing up

have purchased this for my husband for Christmas. Although he wouldn't admit it, he loves Eastenders.
I haven't read this obviously yet as its his all wrapped up ready, but I did take a look inside and I can see some pretty good photo's of Pam growing up, bits about her teenage years, her life through the years. I am looking forward to reading this once my husband is finished.
The book came in good quality and I would highly recommend.
