finally a serious book about the end of a relationship

This is by far the best book I've found about dealing with the pain and trauma of a relationship that has ended. It lays out nineteen stages that you're likely to go through, from denial and fear, through loneliness and rejection/guilt (including a discussion of the differences between being dumped and dumping), grief, anger, and then to the more positive stages of letting go, refinding one's self-worth, becoming more open, loving, trusting and finally finding purpose freedom.
The book is based on years of experience in seminars for divorcees, and there are lots of examples that are well explained and discussed. There are also specific "assignments" for each stage. For instance, there are specific strategies for dealing with fear and anger, and these are very concrete and helpful.
The book also suggests that "growing relationships" can be helpful while working through the aftermath of a serious relationship. Growing relationships can be friendships or sexual relationships, but the point is that they are open, honest, and that a main goal in the relationship is that the partners learn about themselves and each other here and now rather than building a long-term committed and stable relationship. I found it interesting to read about the differences between such a relationship and a conventional, committed, long-term stable relationship. It also freed me from thinking that I should immediately see any new relationship as a committed long-term relationship. There are other kinds too, and many of the authors' insights about growing relationships would also be useful in a long-term, committed relationship.
Each chapter has a section about children's responses to their parents breaking up, in the stage the parents are in, and finally there's an appendix about how to have a healing separation, which is like a trial separation except both parties commit to working constructively towards their personal growth and their coming together again as a couple.

FIVE STARS +++ - Reading this book will help you more fully understand your feelings following the loss of someone you love. This is absolutely the most helpful book to read if you have ever lost someone by divorce or death. While reading it, I felt that Dr. Fisher had been hiding in my house and taking notes. I experienced every emotion possible for someone who has experienced the loss of someone they love. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A great book for personal growth

As someone trying to get over a seven-year relationship back in 1994, this book was my savior. I needed to understand why I felt what I felt. This book allowed me to understand the mix of emotions and turmoil I was going through. And contrary to other books offering more creative approaches, Bruce Fisher's actually explains the complex psychological process of grief, loss and recovery. I still read it today to understand other's feelings and reactions and to better manage my current relationships. A must.

A confused and muddled book.

I have a lot of books on Prasna mostly classics like satpanchasika, prasna jnana, etc, but also a few moderns. However this text was a real pain to read and I kept waiting till when he is going to get to astrology. For pages and pages he explains his, what can only be described, very weird ideas about cosmic consciousness and psychology. Now I am very willing to accept the Vedic version but he tries, unsuccessfully to mix in modern ideas of the brain etc with cosmic rays and you get the idea, it sounds kooky and neither vedic or scientific. When I finally got the actual prasna part I was disappointed, he doesn't really seem to be a master of the subject and I have seen real masters of this science at work. He seems to be more of a hobbyist. Anyway to cut to the chase this is a confused, muddled book. I am going to try and give it another try in the next few days but am not looking forward to it. There are much better books on prasna out there. There are two translations of Prasna Marga, one by BV Raman and the other by JN Bhasin; then there is Prasnapadavi by RK Bhatt. I already mention two others.

Once you have fit a pattern this is the book for everything else

This is an amazing book. It is very, very detailed and not only gives you the individual pieces of information, it also gives you the order of construction. I have the Threads Archive '85-'11, all of Kenneth King's, Claire Shaeffer's and Sandra Betzina's books. Yet PSTfD is the one I always find what I need in terms of pre-design thinking and then every step through to the wearing the garment. Quite a feat.

I am someone who likes my clothes to look good, fit and construction wise. That is pretty much why I sew. This PSTfD book along with Donald H. McCunn's How to Make Sewing Patterns which really helps in figuring out fit are my two most used sewing books. I do enjoy leafing through Claire Shaeffer's Couture Sewing Techniques and Sandra Betzina's Fast Fit. Both give me lots of inspiration and tips. Also Claire Shaeffer's Fabric book is priceless in knowing how to deal with different types of fabric. But the two that have almost everything you need for fit and construction are Professional Sewing Techniques for Designers and How to Make Sewing Patterns.

Both books have lots and lots and lots of line drawings. I prefer them to photos as I am often not sure exactly what I am looking at in a photo. A line drawing de-clutters the context for me and allows me to focus on the particulars under consideration. Also both books have fabulous indexes so I can easily find what I need at the moment. They are both systematically organized, not jumping from one thing to the next, but staying the course, with detail, on whatever is being explained.

I live in a motorhome for the winter months so every book I take has to be worth its weight in gold to me to warrant the space. These two books qualify in spades.

Better than most

I received the book 2 days ago and have already put it to use! I love it.

Already I have found it useful in reminding me not to cut those corners we all tend to cut when we get overly confident or lazy. I found it very refreshing to see the text give examples of "DO this, DON'T do this", as well as the reasons behind it. Often times it's hard to understand when to use techniques on your own unless you know the purpose behind them.
The illustrations are great and even give a little bit of fashion inspiration. HOWEVER, they are not step by step illustrations like you may find in a flat pattern book or sewing instructions included with commercial sewing patterns. It's very important that you read the text and refer to the images as if it really were a school text book, and visualize the process for yourself.

My biggest complaints are these. The techniques really aren't "industry sewing" time saving techniques like what may be used in factory sewing. I was hoping I'd get a taste of that in this book. The techniques are the way good quality clothing should be made, which I will say is much better than most of the books available. Also oftentimes the text and the image it is referring to are on separate pages, so there are times you have to read, flip, flip read, flip.
Lastly the book really isn't like a "bible" or "encyclopedia" of sewing techniques. The chapters are set up in a way as though it's more a textbook meant to be read and worked through systematically. Which really makes sense as there is a workbook companion to go with it. I already find it a little complicated finding the appropriate technique for the garment I'm working on using the index. For example what I'd call a "bustier" or "corset" is in this book considered a "strapless bodice".

In the end, the only reason it's not a 5 star book is that it's not really industry sewing techniques, and not set up as a bible/encyclopedia reference book.

What You need to Know to Sew Fine Women's Clothing

The book is obviously a textbook for students taking formal coursework in fashion design, as it explains the information presented with regards to how the student may find themselves needing or using the information in their professional careers. Having said that, this book would be very valuable to any serious home sewer.

My mother was an outstanding home sewer. Whenever she got her hands on a quality professionally-made garment, she'd turn it inside out and look all over it to see how the professionals got the beautiful finished results that they got. If you would like to do that, if you would like to pick the brain of a top-notch dressmaker, this is your book. You will find things that a mere pattern or a basic sewing class is never going to tell you to do, the little details that low-quality garments do not have, the little details that make it possible to do tricky things well, the little details that make all the difference between "amateur" and "professional".

Incidentally, the book is not about men's clothing, but about making women's clothing. It is also not a basic sewing book, either with regards to hand sewing or machine sewing. That knowledge is largely assumed. It is also not about what makes a good fashion design. Rather, it is a book of the details that have to be kept in mind to achieve what my mother would have called a garment that looks "finished", rather than "homemade". It is a book of what needs to be kept in mind in order to take a fashion idea and make it into the intended reality...and it tells you very clearly which corners may not be cut, and why!

Paging through it, I wish it were set up better as a reference book. (Even if you use this as a textbook the first time through, you'll keep it forever as a reference!) For instance, the page headers do not tell you the number of the chapter you're in, only the title. If you're looking for a diagram in a different chapter, that missing chapter number on the header slows you down, because the diagrams are numbered according to the chapter they are in! I would like to have seen a table of illustrations, too, to make it quicker to find a particular diagram. I want it to be laid out so that if I know "I saw this in there somewhere" I will be able to find it again.

About the Author
Mikael Collan is a professor of strategic finance at the Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland. He has a long background in asset valuation and using fuzzy logic in modeling inaccuracy with regards to corporate investment decision-making. Mikael has worked with a number of multi-national corporations on a number of different issues that have to do with investment profitability analysis and investment decision-making – many of them connected to the examples shown in this book. Mikael serves in the boards of a number of companies and is an active member of the academic community around real option valuation and operational research. He also has a background in information systems research. After finishing his doctoral degree he spent a time in the industry and has since returned to academia and now for the first time shares his views on investment analysis in a book format.

Ann M. Butera is the founder and president of The Whole Person Project, Inc., an organizational development consulting firm that specializes in assisting companies to introduce, handle, and manage change. Her prior work experience as a department manager for a large retailer, a system liaison officer at a major money center bank, and an internal consultant at a bankcard processor, in conjunction with her experience as a business owner and consultant, enables her to develop customized approaches for continuous improvement and increased profitability in organizations of all sizes. She served as an audit committee chair for a financial services firm.

For over 25 years, Ann Butera has consulted with organizations of all sizes to provide managers, auditors, and compliance and risk professionals with the techniques needed to improve their risk management practices. She has worked specifically with audit, compliance, and risk management department managers to develop methodologies that enhance the consistency and quality of audit and review execution.

Ann Butera received her Masters of Business Administration in Organizational Development from Adelphi University and is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Long Island University (C.W. Post Campus).

No answer key

The exercises are great except the answer key is not provided.
Only way to obtain the answer key is to contact Cheng & Tsui.
However, they won't give you the passcode unless you are affiliated with a learning institution.
They told me that they can't give me the answer key due to security reasons.
[How can anyone sell a workbook without providing an answer key???]

great supplement! but...no key

I originally got this book for my class at college. It is a great supplement to test what you learned in the textbook, but there is no answer key. I only got the key from my professor. I guess if they just gave out the key, then professors cant use this book as homework questions. Nonetheless, the exercises are more effective with a partner since theres some exercises that want you to speak and simulate a scenario with your partner. This is great for class use, but without a key self-study with this book proves to be difficult.

The textbook really great but the workbook is just soso! If you did'nt buy the CD and cannot listen to the dialogues, you won't be able to answer many of the questions ;-(
