C. D. C. Reeve is Delta Kappa Epsilon Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Accessible and erudite

This is a beautiful book which pairs lucid translation with meaty commentary. In the introduction, Reeve helpfully addresses the types of questions contemporary readers might pose (i.e. "Is the Investigation in the Metaphysics a Scientific One?"), helping to ensure that concepts aren't "lost in translation." Notes throughout the text open windows into difficult passages. Reeve also often provides the valences of meaning with the original Greek.

The decades Reeve has spent with Plato and Aristotle form a total benefit to the reader: here he presents Aristotle's most difficult work in a manner both accessible and erudite. Buy this book!

good book, poor formatting

The only problem I had with this book was the formatting - it wouldn't let me skip chapters, so if I wanted to skip to, say, chapter 12, I had to swipe though hundreds of pages instead of being able to swipe down a few times. Extremely irritating and inconvenient.

Truly, every problem has multiple solutions, so the question is, “How does one rationally select the design solution with the most favorable economic result?” The answer to this question can also be put forth in two words: engineering economy. A good book actually. Might be able to go without it though if you copy/print the tables in the back and take them to class. I honestly did not even read much of the book itself, maybe a little for reference. Pretty easy class IMO. Rent this book, don't buy it. You will not need it or even want to look at it after the class is over.

Not for serious classes

If you are an economics student who already has a few classes under your belt, then you'll probably be fine with this book. As someone who has not, and was required to take this class, it was a HORRIBLE book to learn from. There is no step by step to this book, it just writes out question and then has the answer. Does not give you the details at all. Similarly, it will have a page or so for each section within the chapter and then 12 practice questions that are completely different.

Bottom line is if your professor requires this book, consider a different professor. If your school uses this book, they aren't serious about engineering economy.

Good theory book

Used in for a mechanical engineering course elective. This was the required text and there are a couple newer versions of this text that I saw but there isn't much change other than page numbering. For the most part the book is good at presenting a method or theory and then having clear examples that follow and give a good explanation. For the most part this is a good book but other than being a required text or just wanting it for a general interest a newer version of the book would probably be what you'll be picking up.

About the Author
Widely read, widely anthologized, widely interviewed, and widely taught, Adrienne Rich (1929–2012) was for decades among the most influential writers of the feminist movement and one of the best-known American public intellectuals. She wrote two dozen volumes of poetry and more than a half-dozen of prose. Her constellation of honors includes a National Book Award for poetry for Tonight, No Poetry Will Serve, a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant in 1994, and a National Book Award for poetry in 1974 for Diving Into the Wreck. That volume, published in 1973, is considered her masterwork. Ms. Rich’s other volumes of poetry include The Dream of a Common Language, A Wild Patience Has Taken Me This Far, An Atlas of the Difficult World, The School Among the Ruins, and Telephone Ringing in the Labyrinth. Her prose includes the essay collections On Lies, Secrets, and Silence; Blood, Bread, and Poetry; an influential essay, “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence,” and the nonfiction book Of Woman Born, which examines the institution of motherhood as a socio-historic construct. In 2006, Rich was awarded the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters by the National Book Foundation. In 2010, she was honored with The Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry's Lifetime Recognition Award.

This may be the best book ever written about motherhood.

This book is a miracle. I have read dozens of books about pregnancy, birth, babies and motherhood, and this blows them all out of the water. Rich's prose is poetry, and her research and scholarship are vast and impeccable. The critical reviews that report that she "didn't like motherhood" missed the point by a long shot (and misquote her). Rich's love for her three sons is clear throughout the book, but she does not shy away from acknowledging and facing the struggles that she faced as a mother. With this book, she explores the profound historical and cultural context in which all Western women experience both the bliss and the difficulties of motherhood. Of Woman Born is a huge gift to all people-- mothers, daughters, and sons. Read it and understand.

The whole story of patriarchy, feminism, and religion in a short readable form

If you want one book that tells the whole story of patriarchy, feminism, and religion in a relatively
short readable form, poet Adrienne Rich's Of Woman Born is hard to beat.

Let's begin with Chapter III, "The Kingdom of the Fathers." Here is her opening: "For the first time in history, a pervasive recognition is developing that the patriarchal system cannot answer for itself; that it is not inevitable; that it is transitory; and that the cross-cultural, global domination of women by men can no longer be either denied or defended." She goes on: "When we acknowledge this, we tear open the relationship at the core of all power-relationships . . . the sexual understructure of social and political forms. " And finally: "For the first time we are in a position to look around us at the Kingdom of the Fathers and take its measure. What we see is the one system which recorded civilization has never actively challenged, and which has been so universal as to seem a law of nature." To explain her title of Motherhood, she notes that "Patriarchy could not survive without motherhood and heterosexuality in their institutional forms: therefore they have to be treated as axioms, as `nature' itself, not open to question." She demonstrates: "In the American colonies an ordinary family consisted of from twelve to twenty-five children. An `old maid,' who might be all of twenty-five years of age, was treated with reproach if not derision; she had no way of surviving economically, and was usually compelled to board with her kin and help with the household and children. No other `calling' was open to her."

This isn't too far from 1952 when I graduated from high school as valedictorian and was sent to college only as "insurance" in case something happened to the husband it was assumed I would `catch' and whose children I would bear. Rich's experience of that time was mine: "I had no idea of what I wanted, what I could or could not choose. I only knew that to have a child was to assume adult womanhood."

Rich's love for her three sons is clear throughout the book, but she directly faces the powerlessness that women face as mothers in the cultural context of patriarchy. As she says, " The woman's body is the terrain on which patriarchy is erected." (Note events in the U.S. Congress as well as around the world if you doubt that.) At the core of feminist issues is the hatred men have for women, which is clearly documented worldwide. Rich suggests that "it is the adolescent ego that is still so uncertain of itself that it perceives the female as threatening." She notes that it isn't a matter of chronological age but "an aspect of male sexuality, which in a great many (probably a majority) of men, continues into middle life and beyond." She says patriarchy is always trying to "kill the dragon" in negating women. It is the adolescent aspect of the male who wants woman for emotional sustenance while also fearing castration and death at her hands. Rich says that this fear is the dragon to be slain.

Rich says, "Few women growing up in patriarchal society can feel mothered enough; the power of our mothers, whatever their love for us and their struggles on our behalf, is too restricted." After all, it is the mother who is expected to teach the female her proper role in patriarchy. The bequest we can give to our daughters (meaning all young women) is the quality of our lives, "however embattled and unprotected. Because a woman who can believe in herself, who is a fighter, and who continues to struggle to create livable space around her, is demonstrating to her daughter" (to all daughters) " that these possibilities exist."

Amazing book

It is powerful, candid, bold, and important. She opened my mind about motherhood and other issues but never strayed -- she is a fierce feminist, unafraid of telling the truth, and this book is a gem.

Smart, Fast and Grimy

A very succinct overview of the insidious, financially complex and mutually dependent relationship between organized crime and Hollywood from the early twentieth century till now, starring all the usual suspects: Al Capone, Bugsy Segal, Meyer Lansky, Sam Giancanna, Jimmy Hoffa, Joseph Kennedy, JFK, George Raft, Frank Sinatra, Lana Turner, Marilyn Monroe, etc and a quite a few more scuzz balls you possibly haven't heard of. The labyrinthian financial ties, the pervasiveness of the mob and its entrenchment at every level of Hollywood's infrastructure from labour unions to marriages, boardrooms to bars, demonstrates that far from being on the fringe of Hollywood activity, the mob were firmly embedded in it. As well as detailing the history of mob intervention and influence, the book parlays the thesis that Hollywood shaped mob culture just as the mob shaped Hollywood product. This is a smart, fast, grimy book with a lot of the financial backstory that is missing from the more glamorous reframings of the mob/Hollywood connection. It demystifies the gangster and presents the motley assortment of miscreants that make up organized crime in the US in such a way, that for the first time ever in a book on gangsters, I found them seriously repulsive. There is nothing redeeming in Tim Adler's depiction of the mob world and its denizens and not much to admire in the Hollywood echelon either. The bleak reality depicted reflects yet again on the hollowness of so much of US culture...and if you don't believe me...read the book.

Worth a look but not the final word

After his book The Producers, Tim Adler has had a go at the history of organised crime influence in Hollywood, this is fair book with plenty of information but sometimes it paints too broad a brush as he seems to see OC all over the place in Hollywood. Certainly though it was a force to be reckoned with but l doubt it reached into every corner as the author sometimes seems to overestimate the Mob's influnce. The Movie Industry could do plenty of illegal and nasty things on its own without The Mob.

There is no doubt though that The Mob supplied prohibition booxe and trafficked addictive drugs to actors and others in the industry and provided plenty of gambling dens! Blackmail and extortion was also in on the act.

There is plenty of anecdotes about actors and the movie moguls who oversaw their careers. George Raft certainly had mob friends like Benny Siegal but was no pushover himself. James Cagney described Raft as the toughest actor in the business and was an ok type of guy! Luciano, Siegel, Lansky, Bioff, Nitti, Ricca and the usual suspects are mentioned freely in the book. The book claims that Thelma Tood was killed by The Mob and the evidence is convincing.

Where The Mob really got hold of Hollywood by the proverbials was in the control it had had over many unions associated with the movie business like the Teamsters and Cinema Projectionists unions. But many unions fought back against the mob and movie mogul's influnce and many were sucessfull! Eventually the Mob overreached itself and a few major members of the Chicago Mob went to jail in 1943 for thier illegal activities in Hollywood. The only Hollywood mogual who fell was Joe Schenck. It was the IRS who caused the most problems for The Mob in Hollywood, certainly not the FBI.

Anyway this book is worth a look! Also have at a look at Hollywood Confidential by Ted Schwarz.

Dull read, questionable facts

Adler has clearly spent a lot of tome researching this book, but unfortunately to little avail. The majority of 'evidence' he bases his work on is tenuous at best - luckily for him nearly all his subjects are now dead so he hasn't had to deal with any law suits (lucky or planned?!). All of this might be half-way forgivable if the book was well written but the writing style is hackneyed and I lost the thread of what he was talking about in a number of places. Anyone who's seriously interested in this subject should check out some of the many other excellent books and documentaries out there instead (The Mob: From Hollywood to Vegas documentary series is a good starting place).

Great Classic on developing Christian Growth

This is an older publication and I think THE classic version of "5 Steps to Christian Growth."
The newer version has the same content, but a major makeover. While the new versions looks nicer, I like the older publication. But whatever version you get, you will greatly benefit from reading and studying this short but deep book.
