Brilliant!

Fahnestock's book focuses on how writers achieve effects from their choices of words, phrases, and sentence patterns. I find it very easy to read, but it isn't a manual that teaches people how to write so much as a manual that gives insight into how one might analyze small portions of text to understand written style better: it is amply illustrated by political speeches, news articles, and other texts so that every point is explained and at least one exemplar analyzed to show how seemingly small changes in style can have important changes in meaning and persuasive effect on an audience. In short, it is a step towards learning how to analyze in detail how persuasion is accomplished through language, which would help you write, but it isn't a manual for writing.

People who teach writing or edit would benefit from studying this book. If you are thinking of an MA or PhD in any communication field (written or oral or combined), this book is an excellent introduction by an outstanding professor. People who teach any subject and ask students to analyze language related to that subject would probably also benefit from it. And anyone who is simply interested in language and persuasion will find this a lucid guide to understanding how stylistic choices impact meaning/audience reception. It will definitely give you a different perspective on the daily communications that come your way.

Excellent discussion of how rhetorical use of stylistic choices can improve and enhance the persuasive use of language

This is a scholarly, interdisciplinary book that draws on classical rhetoric, modern rhetoric, linguistics, language analysis, etymology, and argumentation theory to methodically explore how stylistic choices can improve and enhance the persuasive use of language in both spoken and written formats.

The author divides the book into four parts that discuss and analyze the persuasive effects of stylistic choices in terms of: (1) word choice; (2) sentences; (3) the different interactions between or among the speaker/writer, the audience, other speaker(s)/writers(s), and the occasion and situation in which the speaker/writer is communicating; and (4) passage construction. The author's discussion, analysis, arguments, and conclusions are supported and illustrated by numerous examples of spoken and written language from ancient to modern times, excerpts and quotes from various articles and books about classical and modern rhetoric, thoughtful reasoning, astute observations and insights, and citations to numerous publications (which are listed in an extensive References section at the end of the book).

This book is very methodical and erudite, and requires a reader to invest time and careful attention to follow the author's discussion, analysis, arguments, and conclusions. The author's discussion, analysis, arguments, and conclusions are insightful, informative, thought-provoking, and generally persuasive. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in: (1) a scholarly approach to understanding and appreciating the persuasive use of stylistic choices in written and spoken language; (2) an interdisciplinary approach to examining various persuasive techniques in spoken and written language; or (3) how stylistic choices in written and spoken language can contribute to, and enhance, substantive arguments. Any reader not having some knowledge about, or experience with, classical or modern rhetoric, language analysis, linquistics, or argumentation theory probably will find the book to be too advanced and technical.

A book that comphrehensively tracks linguistics from the vantage of the rhetorical arts of persuasion

A contemporary rhetorical lens on language requires many vantages, from the ancient study of persuasive situations to the history of English, the lexicon, sentence grammar, prosody, and stylistics. There are volumes of books written on each of these subjects, but these books are fragmented across disciplines, argots, and typically siloed within particular granularities of language without the grains adding cumulatively to the holistic effects of persuasion. This book addresses these gaps and addresses them brilliantly. It's a one-stop volume for students of language who want to examine every layer from words to discourses for persuasive saliency. What is particularly compelling about the book is that there are no phony examples. Every concept is carefully illustrated from real life examples the author has culled with painstaking care. Fahnestock's synthetic vision is striking and original but the book is also user-friendly, progresses linearly and cumulatively and could serve as a textbook in an advanced undergraduate or graduate course on language theory pertaining to rhetoric and persuasion.

This book was written as a learning exercise: at the time of writing, I was a experienced programmer looking forward to learn PHP OOP. The books in the market were surprisingly inadequate. Few books were mixing HTML and pure PHP code when explaining OOP concepts (such a distraction!) and few others started with the basics of OOP. And most of the books did not touch upon packaging, autoload and deployment the way I would have wanted to learn---so critical to the modular programming paradigm.
This book was written from my notes, from my learning PHP OOP, with the only aim of addressing the issues mentioned.

Exactly what I needed

I've been programming a while in many OO languages. I didn't want a lot of text, just something to give me a run down on the basics of PHP: how do you define a class, how do you call methods, what can it do/can't it do etc. This book gives you the basis with minimal fuss and even minimal text. A quick and concise read, it's perfect. You won't be an expert in PHP, but you'll know what to do. It obviously presumes some programming and OO background or you will be very lost.

Great, near cheat-sheet style summary of Objects in PHP

I thought this was a great little guide to Object oriented programming in PHP.

Things I liked about it:
- it's not too long
- it's not to short
- examples were really clear and concise and each example is independent

Why I liked it:
Length wise, I don't want a 500 page general PHP book, I like that this is reasonably short and very focused on objects.
At the same time, it's not too short- it feels like a book and I didn't feel ripped off when I got to the end of it.
The examples are mostly independent- what I mean here is, you can jump to anything in the book, and read/use the example without needing to build up from prior chapters.

It reminded me in many ways of a "cheat sheet' - which is a good thing!

Who I think this book would benefit most:
This will benefit programmers who have a good idea about what object oriented programming is. I would say its for the "middle of the pack" - Experts already know all this, and beginners might need a bigger book with more handholding. I think everyone else falls in the middle - we pretty much know what to do, but might need to look up examples as we do it. Also likely in this scenario is that we know maybe 50% of the commands related to object oriented programming in PHP, and want a quick way to 'Fill in' what we're missing. This book covers these scenarios perfectly.

Super helpful, exactly what I needed, just needs a tweak or two

I really appreciate this type of concise summary, targeted at experienced coders coming from other languages like Java.

I would like to see PHP arrays / dictionaries / hashes covered a bit more. In particular, when reading PHP, you'll often find both "->" and "=>" used in the same file. PHP veterans obviously know the difference, but it's odd enough to deserve a quick mention.

I agree with the other review, a big congratulations to the author, this is a great example of a $3 eBook to get up to speed on yet-another programming language.

The third section offers an analysis of programs that are useful in developing women as global leaders, with the final section profiling women as global leaders, including Margaret Thatcher, Nobel Laureate Malala Yousfazai, and Golda Meir. As Barbara Kellerman noted in the Foreword, "this book...should be understood as a collection whose time has come, precisely because women now have opportunities to lead that are far more expansive than they were even in the recent past. Though their numbers remain low, they are able in some cases to exercise leadership not only as outsiders, but also as insiders, from the very positions of power and authority to which men forever have had access."

Good enough

Simply written and with good empirical and theoretical basis here the author presents the H factor and gives us context about the HEXACO personality model and its history. It also gives us a brief explanation of the contemporary dominant personality model the FFM but most important he resumes the work from various studies and adapts it to an every day life approach. Tho is could be more didactic or colorful, as some might prefer it, i find it very useful.

Student perspective: excellent for the beginning neurolinguist.

Written at a high enough level to be comprehensive, edited well enough to be comprehensible, the data presented in these articles is consistently fascinating from the viewpoint of a student studying neurolinguistics.

Having some background in neuroscience and linguistics helps, but the most advanced concepts (and longest acronyms) are spelled out clearly, sometimes even with helpful re-definitions later in the articles.

Not a casual read, but priceless. The title is highly accurate.

Interesting but complicated

For me, whose first language isn't English, the meaning of the text was sometimes difficult to grasp. Some of the authors make it almost impossible to understand what they mean if you're not familiar with the subject, others explain complicated phenomenona brilliantly. The subjects are REALLY interesting, but requires some background knowledge in neurolinguistics. Would absolutely recommend it!

THE definitive Mustang read!

WOW! This is a fantastic account of behind the scenes research and management decisions which led to the greatest, most successful, and longest lasting niche in the 100+ years of automobile manufacture. If you've ever wondered what goes into a new design from Detroit this book lays out in detail the years long search for a successful new direction. For enthusiasts, "Mustang Genesis" is the definitive body of work about the marque. For all automobile-philes it is a truly informative account of how all of a company's departments work together to reach consensus. It also is a great tribute to the genius of Lee Iacocca. Best of all, despite the incredible volume of research which obviously went into it, this book is a fun and easy read. Mustangers, start your engines - and go get this book!

This is an informative yet very interesting book that give references into the many key players involved in the formation of the Ford Mustang. It offers an in depth look into a very integral part of the Mustang legend. It is about time that the story of the Mustang be put into a book for all to read. With many of the key players gone today, their story would go untold if it wasn't for this. This is a great read for mustang enthusiasts as well as anyone interested in an all American tribute to the great minds behind the automotive industry.

Wonderfully detailed book on development of original Mustang. Well written with many researched facts that I was not aware of, especially how the Mustang project came to be and the many designers who worked on it. Each designer is included and information given about them. I highly recommend it to all Mustang lovers!

If you enjoy reading stories about where your favorite recipes came from, this is a wonderful cookbook written by a dear family friend. Not only is she a proven chef, but each of her recipes is written steeped in the love of her mother, the joy of cooking and generosity in feeding those who love to eat. The pictures are vibrant, the recipes are easy to follow and everything about this cookbook is heartfelt. You don't have to have a taste for the exotic...you just have to have a passion for food with a lot of heart. Looking forward to this becoming a hardcover...with volumes!!!!

About the Author
Brian F. Pegg has recently retired after a long career which took in many aspects of the plastering craft. After a five-year apprenticeship and winning various awards, including the gold medal for the Final City & Guilds examination 1960, he taught at Hammersmith and West London College, eventually becoming lecturer in charge of plastering. Moving into industry to be Technical Director and Head of Research and Development of an international company, he gained experience in administration and costing, as well as more knowledge of work with plastics. The final episode of his career was in set and props production in the British film industry.

W.D. Stagg was for many years lecturer in charge of plastering, and subsequently Head of the Department of Building Crafts at Hammersmith and West London College. He is a founder member of the Plasterers’ Craft Guild and a past chairman.

Plastering: An Encyclopedia

Quite a comprehensive volume. Probably of more use to a person with some practical plastering background rather than a complete novice. The writers do assume some prior knowledge on the part of the reader, however that's not to say a novice couldn't gain something from this book, it's not a version of Plastering for Dummies.

The book answered a lot of questions of terms. I wasn't familiar with many vocabulary of plastering like "cornices" or "Darby". I have been plastering for about 6 years and this book helped me better understand the craft and the tools. Plus I am not a big reader and I breezed through it!

Albert Camus (1913-1960) was a French author, journalist, and philosopher, who won the 1957 Nobel Prize for Literature for his novels such as The Stranger, The Plague, The Fall, etc. He also wrote nonfiction such as The Myth of Sisyphus: And Other Essays, The Rebel: An Essay on Man in Revolt, Lyrical and Critical Essays, etc.

He states in one letter, “What is truth, you used to ask? To be sure, but at least we know what falsehood is; that is just what you have taught us. What is spirit? We know its contrary, which is murder. What is man? There I stop you, for we know. Man is that force which ultimately cancels all tyrants and gods. He is the force of evidence. Human evidence is what we must preserve, and our certainty at present comes from the fact that its fate and our country’s fate are linked together. If nothing had any meaning, you would be right. But there is something that still has a meaning.” (Pg. 14)

In another letter, he says, “I… chose justice in order to remain faithful to the world. I continue to believe that this world has no ultimate meaning. But I know that something in it has a meaning and that is man, because he is the only creature to insist on having one. This world has at least the truth of man; and our task is to provide it justifications against fate itself. And it has no justification but man; hence he must be saved if we want to save the idea we have of life.” (Pg. 28)

He observes, “Nothing is given to men, and the little they can conquer is paid for with unjust deaths. But man’s greatness lies elsewhere. It lies in his decision to be stronger than his condition. And if his condition is unjust, he has only one way of overcoming it, which is to be just himself. Our truth of this evening… is just what consoles man. He said in a lecture given at the Dominican Monastery at Latour-Maubourg in 1948, “I should like first to acknowledge your intellectual generosity by stating a few principles. First, there is a lay pharisaism in which I shall strive not to indulge. To me a lay Pharisee is the person who pretends to believe that Christianity is an easy thing and asks of the Christian… more than he asks of himself. I believe indeed that the Christian has many obligations but that it is not up to man who rejects them himself to recall their existence to anyone who has already accepted them. If there is anyone who can ask anything of the Christian, it is the Christian himself… The other day… a Catholic priest said in public that he too was anticlerical. Well, I don’t like priests who are anticlerical any more than philosophies that are ashamed of themselves. Hence I shall not… try to pass myself off as a Christian in your presence. I share with you the same revulsion from evil. But I do not share your hope, and I continue to struggle against this universe in which children suffer and die.” (Pg. 69-71)

He suggests, “It is true that freedom, when it is made up principally of privileges, insults labor and separates it from culture. But freedom is not made up principally of privileges; it is made up especially of duties. And the moment each of us tries to give freedom’s duties precedence over its privileges, freedom joins together labor and culture and sets in motion the only force that can effectively serve justice.” (Pg. 96)

He admits, “I confess, insofar as I am concerned, that I cannot love all humanity except with a vast and somewhat abstract love. But I love a few men, living or dead, with such force and admiration that I am always eager to preserve in others what will someday perhaps make them resemble those I love. Freedom is nothing else but a chance to be better, whereas enslavement is a certainty of the worst.” (Pg. 102-103) He continues, “If, after all, men cannot always make history have a meaning, they can always act so that their own lives have one.” (Pg. 106)

In his “Reflections on the Guillotine” essay, he suggests, “If fear of death is, indeed, a fact, another fact is that such fear, however great it may be, has never sufficed to quell human passions. Bacon is right in saying that there is no passion so weak that it cannot confront and overpower fear of death. Revenge, love, honor, pain, another fear manage to overcome it… For centuries the death penalty… has been trying to hold crime in check; yet crime persists. Why? Because the instincts that are warring in man are not, as the law claims, constant forces in a state of equilibrium. They are variable forces constantly waxing and waning, and their repeated lapses from equilibrium nourish the life of the mind as electrical oscillations, when close enough, set up a current.” (Pg. 190)

Later, he adds, “even in its primitive form [the law of retaliation] can operate only between two individuals of whom one is absolutely innocent and the other absolutely guilty. The victim, to be sure, is innocent. But can the society who is supposed to represent the victim lay claim to innocence? Is it not responsible, at least in part, for the crime it punishes so severely?” (Pg. 206) He concludes, “the abolition of the death penalty ought to be asked for by all thinking members of our society, for reasons both of logic and realism.” (Pg. 220)
