One you will enjoy!

The first few pages, I was getting emotional and saying "no way" are kids grown up, what a twister. I was ready to stop and give this one five stars when I read Sprig's name. When you read the book you will see what I mean. I enjoyed the storyline and new character which could make the family dynamic quite interesting in the future.

There was one 'tough love' scene that surprised the heck out of me. Again, I was talking to my reader saying, "OH NO" but I quickly reminded myself that act was completely indicative of Mick the Tick's character. He's just crazy, a real sexy crazy ticking time bomb! The man really LOVES. Good job with this one Ms. Monroe.

Oh my goodness

Mallory Monroe is one of favorite authors and she didn't disappoint me. All I know is that I can hardly wait for the next one. A lot of twist and turns but it will keeping you guessing on who's the traitor and through it all how has back for the havoc that is about to breakout because with Mick the Tick he doesn't play when it comes his family or the love of his life Roz.

Omg!!!!! Mick and Roz what a combination... These two gave me life from beginning to end. Their love for each other is undeniable.. Yes, he constantly kept saying it but he showed and proved it as well. He's definitely my favorite male character of all the mob series. It's just something about his character thats flawless even with all of his flaws.
And.... Roz that confrontation scene between her and Mick had me on the edge of my seat.. The build up leading up to scene gripping. Roz is no joke and I was afraid for Mick.. Don't want to give anything away but that was too much for my mick....

Also love the addition of the lost sister great touch

Ackerman (A Natural History of the Senses) tells the remarkable WWII story of Jan Zabinski, the director of the Warsaw Zoo, and his wife, Antonina, who, with courage and coolheaded ingenuity, sheltered 300 Jews as well as Polish resisters in their villa and in animal cages and sheds. Using Antonina's diaries, other contemporary sources and her own research in Poland, Ackerman takes us into the Warsaw ghetto and the 1943 Jewish uprising and also describes the Poles' revolt against the Nazi occupiers in 1944. She introduces us to such varied figures as Lutz Heck, the duplicitous head of the Berlin zoo; Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira, spiritual head of the ghetto; and the leaders of Zegota, the Polish organization that rescued Jews. Ackerman reveals other rescuers, like Dr. Mada Walter, who helped many Jews pass, giving lessons on how to appear Aryan and not attract notice. Ackerman's writing is viscerally evocative, as in her description of the effects of the German bombing of the zoo area: ...the sky broke open and whistling fire hurtled down, cages exploded, moats rained upward, iron bars squealed as they wrenched apart. A WWII story both beautiful and horrifying

The Zookeeper’s Wife, a true story set in Warsaw, Poland at the onset of WWII, is both horrifying and endearing on a scale I’ve not experienced in years. Antonina lives with her husband and small son in a villa on the zoo grounds. They are extremely knowledgeable about the animals in their care; each one with their individual quirks, and all loved like family. The zoo is well ahead of its time in providing natural habitats for its residents. Laid out like a lush garden, it’s a world famous showplace, a haven for both people and animals. Then the Nazis come with their tanks and bombs and total disregard for life. Drunken Gestapo agents shoot animals in their cages for sport. A pig the son is caring for is snatched away and butchered. But somehow the family manages, by one clever ploy after another, to remain at the villa where they daringly rescue Jews and work in the resistance. Yet through all the fear and deprivation, the spirit triumphs.
Yes, at times Ackerman indulges in excessive scene-setting, eulogizing linden trees, for instance. Or she'll go off on a pages-long explanatory tangent - which, despite my impatient nature, nearly always proved fascinating. But all-in-all, I'd have to rank The Zookeeper's Wife right up there with Leon Uris' Mila 18 for a story that will haunt you forever.

Just started reading and already CAN'T PUT IT DOWN! I love how Ms. Ackerman captures small details, that really do help the reader visualize what is being read (authors are amazing)! Looking forward (not really, hate when great books have to end) to finishing and then watching the movie! Kudos to Diane Ackerman on a well written book!

Will post an updated review once I am done, but unless Amazon adds a 6th star to the rating, I can assure you, you won't want to put it down either!

About the Author

Dr. Kevin Yallup graduated from Cambridge University, UK with a degree in natural sciences, specializing in solid state physics. He received his Ph.D from University of Leuven, Belgium. Currently, he is chief technical officer at Alberta Centre for Advanced MNT Products, Edmonton, Canada. He possesses over 15 years of experience in MNT product development in a number of industries and has held engineering management roles at Technology for Industry Ltd., CDT Ltd., Kymata Ltd., BCO Technologies (NI) Ltd., National Semiconductor, and Analog Devices. Additionally, he has worked with various universities and companies to take a technology through to full commercialization.

Dr. Krzysztof (Kris) Iniewski is managing R&D at Redlen Technologies Inc., Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, a leading manufacturer of high resolution cadmium zinc telluride semiconductor radiation detectors. He is also president of CMOS Emerging Technologies Research Inc., Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, an organization hosting high-tech events on communications, microsystems, optoelectronics, and sensors. Roth in transition

The Counterlife is one of Roth's most unusual and experimental novels, and finds Roth in transition from the spare, elegant books of the Zuckerman Bound trilogy to the more expansive Zuckerman novels of his recent, acclaimed "America" trilogy (American Pastoral, I Married a Communist, and The Human Stain).

In The Counterlife we get the full range of Roth--from the moving but wickedly funny first part Basel, where Nathan Zuckerman narrates the events leading to his brother Henry's death and subsequent funeral, to the second section Judea, where Nathan goes to Israel to try to lure Henry (restored to life and now part of a militant Zionist group) back home to the States, to a later section where Nathan has died, and an estranged Henry attends his funeral, to the final sections with Nathan in England, dealing with anti-Semitism and his wife's family in a brilliant bit of social comedy.

Plot sounds confusing, right? Yet The Counterlife is not a wildly post-modern novel, but a fairly straightforward read. Not all parts of the book work as effectively as the others, and the book is less finished than some of Roth's other work, but there are stretches here that contain some of the best writing Roth has ever done. This is a book deeply concerned with questions of identity and free will--more specifically about the many lives we create for ourselves and the way we often form these lives by reacting with or against other people's conceptions of us.

It's a remarkably thought-provoking and absorbing novel; if I would withhold it from the very top tier of Roth's achievements it's only because it lacks the cohesion and concentration of his best work. Still, a deeply rewarding book, and a must-read for Roth fans.

Roth's "Variations On a Theme"

This is the best novel I have read by Philip Roth (so far). It is unlike anything I have read by him before, or by many others, for that matter. When I finished it, I was reminded of a number of musical compositions called "Variations On a Theme By xxxxx), in which a composer takes a theme by another composer and then composes several variations on that theme. Here, however, the original theme is by Roth himself, so that Roth is writing variations on his own theme.

I don't like people who write reviews with spoilers, so I won't do that here, in that I won't reveal any crucial plot elements. However, I don't believe it would ruin any prospective reader's enjoyment to reveal the book's basic structure. The book is divided into 5 sections. In the first, a major event occurs to one of the characters. In the second, the tape is rewound and that same character's life takes another course. In the third and, in my opinion, the most expendable part of the book, which follows directly from the second section, an unsettling event happens to one of the other main characters. In the fourth, the tape is rewound once again and the same thing that happened to one of the characters in the first section happens to one of the other characters. The fifth section follows directly from the second without the events in the third section having happened. Moreover, in this section one of the characters becomes aware that she is a character in a novel and begins talking back to the author.

Confused? I wouldn't blame you if you were. However, the book does come together with remarkable coherence at the end because it deals with several universal human themes. I think all human beings have "what ifs?" in their lives. Haven't all of us wondered at time what our lives would have been like if such and such hadn't happened. Roth shows us several different scenarios as to how things might have turned out for his characters. Another major theme is Jewish identity: how does a Jew fit into a society where he is a minority and perhaps an outsider? Or, does he reject that society and go to Israel, where Jews run the show? How does a gentile who is in no way anti-Semitic manage a relationship with a Jew she loves but who is also full of anger at the history of anti-Semitism? Finally, what is real and what isn't? What is the difference between fiction and reality? This is not an original theme, to be sure, but rather handles it with exceptional skill and finesse.

Finally, I must comment on Roth's prose style. Roth writes the clearest and most lucid prose of any modern American writer, with the possible exception of John Updike. Reading Roth is nearly effortless. What may be difficult and may cause the reader to pause are the ideas he discusses, but never the prose style. I cannot recommend this book highly enough as a riveting and talented read.

About the Author
Matt Gaser is a Spectrum Award–winning illustrator/ visual development artist living in Northern California. He began his studies learning Illustration and Entertainment Design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. After graduation he worked in video games for six years doing concept design on such PS2 titles as Eragon and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

The games industry eventually led him to an amazing opportunity working for Lucasfilm on the CG animated TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars as a lighting concept artist. After Lucasfilm, he decided to shift gears and embarked on working for himself out of his studio. Some of the projects he’s been designing for in recent years include Green Lantern: The Animated Series, the feature film HOP, and a new animated movie currently in development through Sony Pictures Animation and Rovio Animation. His passion for making books has also led him to a two-book deal with Chronicle Books, developing a fantasy adventure series marketed towards children and young adults. Matt continues to live and work for himself in Petaluma, CA.

After graduating from The Art Center in Pasadena Christian Alzmann was hired into Industrial Light & Magic's art department. 16 years later, he is still with ILM and now a Senior Art Director. He has worked on numerous film projects including A.I., Men in Black 2, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars Episode Two: Attack of the Clones, War of the Worlds, the fourth installment of Indiana Jones, Transformers and Star Trek 2. Christian is currently working on Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens. As a visual storyteller Christian has also illustrated book covers for Science Fiction and Fantasy novels. His clients include Harper Collins, Penguin Books, IDG and Future Publishing. Christian's artwork has been featured in “Star Wars Mythmaking: Behind the Scenes of Attack of the Clones”, “Van Helsing: The Making of the Legend”, “Inside Men in Black II”, “Expos�” and “Spectrum” 9-16. Christian resides in San Rafael, CA.

Glenn Rane is a concept artist and illustrator who has worked in the video game industry for nearly 15 years. As one of the key artists at Blizzard Entertainment, Glenn creates concept art and high profile illustrations for the Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo franchises. Glenn resides in Irvine, CA.

Fantastic

This is a 112-page hardcover featuring the personal artworks of Matt Gaser, an illustrator and concept artist from Northern California.

The book features lots of sketches and detailed coloured paintings. The subject matter is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy. Matt is good at both and is able to create really believable worlds and characters.

The character and creature designs are wonderful. There the more cartoon-like ones and also the more realistic pieces. Most of all, I like the settings where the characters are based. Even if it's just a glimpse of the background, it adds depth to the main character art.

The colour paintings are also gorgeous. The lighting and colour schemes are lovely. They are coloured in a stylised manner as oppose to total realism and that is the Matt Gaser's style to fantasy and sci-fi. You should also check out more artworks on his website. Many artworks appear more vibrant on his website compared to the printed version in this book.

This is a fantastic artbook. Highly recommended.

The Imagination Explored!! Artistic Inspiration

This book is a look into the imagination of Matt Gaser. It is filled with illustrations that are both visually amazing and creative. The attention to detail in this work makes you feel like you are actually there and the characters are real. The colors used.... It's just simply amazing. You have to see it for yourself. It is a book you can get lost in for hours. Also, along with the final product are some "thought illustrations" on either the characters or the scene itself. This is nice to see because you can get an idea of what is going on in Matt's head as he is creating the final scene. Beautiful work, Matt is simply an amazing artist. You will not be displeased.

A wonderful peek into worlds of imagination

This fantastic book really showcases the breadth of Matt Gaser's imagination and his skill as a realizer of worlds not-yet-explored. I founds the book great for the look into Matt's process, from rough sketches to full painted illustrations. My son (age 8) found the book equally fascinating (it's definitely appropriate for all ages) and it inspired him to start creating his own worlds with their own rules and logic, like Matt's. (This weekend my son was creating a made up alphabet for his world, heavily influenced by the drawings and symbols in this book.) Really beautiful and inspiring work!

Using social media and the web to funnel sales to your business is the aim of this easy-to-read, powerful guide to digital selling.

If you are still transforming your business from the “analogue world” the book helps you understand what you are getting into Those with some form of digital presence and online activity aren’t left out either, since there may be a lot of polishing or renovation of existing activities to undertake. You may think you are a digital expert because you’ve grown up around computers and the Internet, using social media as a third arm, yet the way you conduct your business online is not necessarily so simple. Mistakes can be made or, even worse, you are wasting potential opportunities due to ignorance and misunderstanding.

This is an advice-rich, forward-thinking book that is going to benefit predominantly SMEs, yet much of the same goodness can be used within the larger corporate beasts too with a degree of modification. If you let it, the book may even help refocus and restructure processes within your company that may not directly touch on the digital realm since the same advice may be universal, such as how you prospect a customer and present to them; elements may differ but the core remains the same. If you have a rotten core, your fruit harvest may be somewhat rotten too…

The author is critical that many companies use outdated sales models, backed up by inefficient and obsolete systems and methods from a bygone time. This is true and you may need to get with the programme before your rivals or a new upstart eats your lunch. That does not mean you throw away the baby with the bathwater, but you selectively and carefully deploy the right new tools to take you forward. There is no change for change’s sake here!

There is a good chance that a lot of the information presented may be redundant to the reader but it is still worthy of a skim-read as buried in-between “stuff you know” can be additional tips or knowledge that may just make your existing processes shine. Yet there was still a lot of “new stuff” and even refreshing one’s existing knowledge was not a wasted exercise.

About the Author

John R Wilson was Professor of Human Factors at the University of Nottingham and also worked for many years part time as a human factors specialist within Network Rail, the UK rail infrastructure provider. He was both a Chartered Psychologist and a Chartered Engineer, as well as being a Fellow of the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (president in 2010-2011), member of the HFES and Registered European Ergonomist. He was editor-in-chief of Applied Ergonomics, in 1995 was awarded the Sir Frederic Bartlett Medal of the Ergonomics Society for services to international ergonomics teaching and research, and was awarded the Distinguished Overseas Colleague Award of the US Human Factors and Ergonomics Society in 2008. He served for many years on the Council and the Executive of the International Ergonomics Association.

Sarah Sharples is a Professor of Human Factors at the University of Nottingham. She leads a number of projects investigating novel technologies in workplace contexts including transport, manufacturing and healthcare, collaborating with a wide range of industry and academic partners. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors and will be president of the institute in 2014-2015. She led the Human Factors Research Group at the University of Nottingham to the award of the President’s Medal from the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors in 2013.
