Rethinking What a Resume Is
Yeah, I think I know what you want. You want me to get right to it. Tell you how to write a winning resume, give you an outline or template, tell you how to fill it in, tell you where to post it. And that’s that.

Well, much as I would love to do that, I just can’t.
Resumes need a lot more thought these days. Since the Great Recession of 2008, resumes aren’t working too well.

I’m guessing you knew that.

Everyone assumes this is because there are no jobs these days.
Well, there are jobs. I’m looking at the government’s little-known report, sitting here on my desk right now. It’s called JOLTS for short, but its full name is�Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. You can look it up on the Internet. It’s issued monthly. This one is for January 2014. It reports that during that month, 4,500,000 people in the United States found jobs, and there were still 4,000,000 vacancies unfilled at the end of that month.�That’s a total of 8,500,000 vacancies filled or waiting to be filled. That month! That’s pretty typical in the United States. Every month.

Now admittedly, that’s not enough jobs or enough vacancies to fix our distressing unemployment problem. Still,�somebody’s�getting those eight million jobs. Each month.
Why shouldn’t you be among them?

Well, one reason—a�big�reason—may be your resume.
It almost certainly needs fixin’.
Yesterday’s resumes just aren’t up to the task today.
Yesterday’s resumes are like a dull knife trying to cut food. Need sharpening. Badly.
These days, you can’t just fill out a resume, post it, and expect it to go anywhere.
Resumes now take more time than they used to.
They take more thought than they used to.
In this economic climate, you have to work harder to make yours effective, in finding those jobs that are out there.

But you can do it. Yes, you can.

That’s what this little book is about.

Let’s start simple, with some thinking. Or, rethinking.

Let’s Start Simple

Okay, here’s the story:
You want to find work. To find it, you’ve got to secure an interview with some employer or employers who actually have the power to hire you. And employers are busy people.
They’re not necessarily anxious to spend all day doing interviews. So, since you know that, you send someone on ahead of you, to plead your case for you.

And that�someone�is not actually a person but a piece of paper.

Yes, you send a piece of paper on ahead of you, to make the case as to why you should be invited in for an interview. And that piece of paper has a name. It is called a�resume.�Or resum�. Or r�sum�. Or its near cousin, CV (curriculum vitae,�meaning “the course of my life”).

Now, the most interesting thing about this piece of paper (digital or real) is that while it looks like just a bunch of words, it really is a painting. And that’s because employers have the same thing you do:�imagination.

Yes, your resume looks like just words. A lot of words. But when they’re reading your resume, the words are lifting off the page and painting a picture of you in the imagination of the employer who reads it.

Employers wouldn’t call it a painting; they would call it an “impression” of you. Same thing. They are looking at this piece of paper, covered with words, but they are thinking in terms of pictures. They are visualizing you.

Now, here’s the question. Do the words they read make them visualize you as a competent worker, or not? Do the words they read make them visualize you as energetic, or not? As joyful, or not? As a team player, or not? As honest, or not?

And let’s throw in: Do they visualize you as�tall, short,�or�average height? Young, middle-aged,�or�old?�Yes, those things aren’t covered in your resume, but employers can’t turn their imaginations off, just because they’ve finished looking at this piece of paper you sent on ahead of you. Rightly or wrongly, they see, they imagine, beyond your words. That’s just human nature.

But to my main point: It’s not just words that determine whether or not they decide to call you in for an interview. It’s the picture of you that these words paint in an employer’s imagination that determines whether they invite you in, or not.

So, when you set out to compose your resume, you would do well to think of yourself overall as a painter, not a writer. Your paintbrushes are your words. What is the�picture�of you that they paint? That is the question you should ask yourself, when you—or someone you hire—are debating what words to set down in your resume.

Eight Seconds
Let’s say you see a job posting. Some employer is looking for someone to fill a vacancy or a job newly created. You send in your resume. And you want to know how long an employer will likely spend looking at this resume/painting of you that you are sending on ahead, to plead your case for you. The answer will vary, of course.

There’s a difference, for example, between how long the owner of a restaurant will spend looking at the resume you drop off, when you are applying to become the manager there, versus how long a multibillion-dollar corporation will spend looking at your resume when 250 came in that day. With a small employer you might get as much as two minutes. With larger employers, we know�(because people have measured it) that generally your resume will get between four and fifteen seconds of attention. The average is eight.

Eight seconds! Yikes! An employer is going to be reading down your resume fast. In fact, they may not get all the way to the bottom in those eight seconds. So, what they read first, what they see in the top half or even top third of your resume, is going to be determinative.

What can you do about�that?
What can you do about this painting that the employers may be taking only a fast look at?

Well, real painters of course paint in various ways. But, as we can tell from the sketchbooks of famous painters like Rembrandt (right*), they usually begin by laying down in broad strokes the outline of the whole portrait or picture. Then later they fill in. Details, shading, and such.

If your resume is only going to get eight seconds of attention, then it must do something like that. In the top third of your resume you must lay down in broad strokes an outline of who you are, using the words you write. Enough to make the employer hungry to see what else you have to say for yourself, as during the remaining two-thirds you shade and fill in. So to speak.

Along These Lines: Writing Sentences and Paragraphs is a grammar and writing text (with selected readings) designed for beginning writers. As we planned the book, we recalled our struggles to learn the basics of using a computer. No one method seemed to work for us. Listening to an instructor didn't work; he or she went too fast. Watching other students in the class provided some help, but we soon got lost trying to follow their lead. Reading manuals alone in our offices was no solution; either. And simply turning on the computer, clicking and double-clicking, often left us floundering. While no single method taught us everything we needed to know, a combination of all these strategies did the trick.

We realized that the way we learned to be computer literate is the same way students learn to write—not by any one method, but by a variety of strategies. Merely listening to a teacher talk about writing or simply reading about how to write is not enough. Beginning writers, like computer novices, need to try all approaches: reading, listening, practicing, and experiencing the collegiality of working with their peers. Therefore, this book is filled with exercises and activities, both individual and collaborative, that involve students in the process of learning to write. We designed this book as a menu of instruction and activities, providing ample options to accommodate a diversity of teaching strategies and student populations. Organizational Features

At the same time, this menu is structured around a simple, consistent pattern for writing. The word Lines in the title serves as a cue to the stages of the writing process:

Thought Lines: the time spent generating ideas Outlines: the steps of planning and focusing Rough Lines: the steps of drafting and revising Final Lines: the last step, proofreading

The writing chapters of Along These Lines: Writing Sentences and Paragraphs are structured around these stages. A chapter on "Writing from Reading" also uses these steps in explaining how students can write summaries, reaction paragraphs, or essay tests from reading selections. Preface TO INSTRUCTORS

Along These Lines: Writing Sentences and Paragraphs is a grammar and writing text (with selected readings) designed for beginning writers. As we planned the book, we recalled our struggles to learn the basics of using a computer. No one method seemed to work for us. Listening to an instructor didn't work; he or she went too fast. Watching other students in the class provided some help, but we soon got lost trying to follow their lead. Reading manuals alone in our offices was no solution; either. And simply turning on the computer, clicking and double-clicking, often left us floundering. While no single method taught us everything we needed to know, a combination of all these strategies did the trick.

We realized that the way we learned to be computer literate is the same way students learn to write—not by any one method, but by a variety of strategies. Merely listening to a teacher talk about writing or simply reading about how to write is not enough. Beginning writers, like computer novices, need to try all approaches: reading, listening, practicing, and experiencing the collegiality of working with their peers. Therefore, this book is filled with exercises and activities, both individual and collaborative, that involve students in the process of learning to write. We designed this book as a menu of instruction and activities, providing ample options to accommodate a diversity of teaching strategies and student populations.

Organizational Features

At the same time, this menu is structured around a simple, consistent pattern for writing. The word Lines in the title serves as a cue to the stages of the writing process:

• Thought Lines: the time spent generating ideas
• Outlines: the steps of planning and focusing
• Rough Lines: the steps of drafting and revising
• Final Lines: the last step, proofreading

The writing chapters of Along These Lines: Writing Sentences and Paragraphs are structured around these stages. A chapter on "Writing from Reading" also uses these steps in explaining how students can write summaries, reaction paragraphs, or essay tests from reading selections. An eclectic mix of activities is thus supported by a flexible framework for thinking, planning, drafting, and revising, providing students with the security of a clear and simple process as they develop their writing skills.

The grammar chapters also follow a consistent pattern, providing three kinds of exercises:

• Practice: exercises for simple reinforcement of the grammar principle being discussed
• Collaborate: more complex exercises to be done with a partner or group
• Connect: application of the grammar principle to paragraphs

Throughout the book, you will notice these features:

• No more than two pages of print are without an example, a chart, a checklist, a box, a list, or an exercise.
• The text has a lively, conversational tone, including question-and-answer formats and dialogues.

• Collaborative exercises directing students to write with peers, interview classmates, react to others' suggestions, and build on others' ideas

A Good Textbook

This book is used in many Learning Support courses and is a very vital tool. It includes a good explanation of basic grammar rules and a host of exercises to apply the rules learned. I do wish that more attention was given to areas like common spelling errors and commas, which many people find confusing. I've used this textbook in many Learning Support classes, and my students were always very pleased with it.

Blondie Hasler was the leader of the famous 'Cockleshell Heroes'. He was one of only two 'Cockleshell Heroes' who came back alive, the other being Bill Sparks, his partner in the cockleshell Catfish. His story is told by former Royal Marine, Ewen Southby- Tailyour. The story of how Blondie managed to make contact with the Maquis once he and Sparks had completed the mission is well worth a book in itself.

Although the book offers a new insight into the men that were the 'Cockleshell Heroes' Blondie Hasler was more than just a 'Cockleshell Hero'. Ewen Southby- Tailyour has been given full access to family archive material, which reveals Herbert George Hasler as an extraordinary figure who makes this one of the outstanding biographies of the year.

Very in-depth look at an intensely professional individual

'Blondie' will appeal to WWII buffs and also to sailors. Hasler was the original "cockleshell hero". The first half is a difficult read owing to many, many military acronyms. After the war (about midway through) the book picks up speed and becomes quite a bit more enjoyable. The horrible reality of war really comes through, and this is over all a good read. Blondie was a consummate professional who loved adventure. His life is a story worth telling. Floyd Bryant, 9-Mar-99

Sailing with Colonel Hasler

I must admit that I had Blondie Hasler pegged wrong! Most people who have a knowledge of solo sailing, self-steering gear or World War II commando activity have run across Lieutenant Colonel Hasler. I imagine that the usual extent of people's familiarity with Hasler begins and ends with his "Cockleshell Hero" raid, and his famous quote about sailors who get into trouble in trans-ocean single handed races. ("They should drown like gentlemen.") This brief exposure to Blondie Hasler, I believe, leaves one to imagine him as a too tough, bull-headed, 'Colonel Blimp' type, English boys' adventure hero. Reading Blondie: A Biography of Lt. Colonel H.G. Hasler, by Ewen Southby-Tailyour will disabuse you of that false assessment of Hasler and give you a much better picture of him as a real, flesh and blood human being. And I am very glad of it! Blondie Hasler is one of those men who have been reduced to a comic book character by the hyperbole of a movie about a single incident in their lives. Hasler was so much more and is depicted by the book as being infinitely more likable than he was allowed to be by the limited and skewed image that has been portrayed of him. Yes, Blondie is still heroic, but thankfully Southby-Tailyour's book makes him a three dimensional character instead of a cardboard cut out. I embarked on Blondie's biography with some trepidation. It was rather lengthy and it was written by someone whose father served with Colonel Hasler, either of which could spell disaster in a biography. But Southby-Tailyour rose to the occasion and delivered a complete biography without succumbing to the tedium of minutia or fawning 'great man' worship. The book is quite readable and covers the well known aspects of Blondie's life sufficiently. More important however, is that Southby-Tailyour made Hasler into a complete person, and frankly, someone who I would like to have personally known and sailed with. I definitely do not miss the pre-biography, single dimensional, imagined Hasler. I vastly prefer Southby-Tailyour's real person. Keep in mind that this is a fairly complete history of Hasler, so if you will read about his extensive military career, his design and innovation career and his sailing career. I enjoyed it all because it all served to make Colonel Hasler the fascinating person he was.

I knew about Hasler before buying the book, being a solo sailing junkie so I was intrigued to finally read the book. It is eminently readable, easy going in tone without too much of the authors ego in it. I found some excellent quotes/concepts on leadership from Hasler in it. The details and particulars appear to be well researched & I have already recommended it in one of my sailing seminars.
For folks interested in the subject of the Genesis of modern solo ocean racing or the man in particular, including views on seamanship it is an invaluable read.

The Authority on Scarlatti

Harpsicordist and musicologist Ralph Kirkpatrick's Domenico Scarlatti has been the work that all the encyclopedia's quote when speaking of Domenico Scarlatti. It was extremely well researched, and I beleive that when he says there's "no known information" about something he looked long and hard for it. The book is informative without being to technical. It is the authority on Dominico Scarlatti's life and body of work. If you are a pianist and especially if you play his sonatas, it is well worth reading.

A Scarlatti Primer..Plus

The first 7 chapters are historical narratives without unusual merit except as an intoduction to the real book which is about music. There is a chapter on harpsichords. Kirkpatrick was not the first thinker on Scarlatti as evidenced by the extensive bibliography and appendix
He did establish the K identification number system which has stood the test of time at least in this country.
His real contribution is in identifying Scarlatti as a real musician writing music of extraordinary merit. His chapter on Scarlatti's harmony is very difficult reading.
The last chapter on "Performance of the Scarlatti Sonatas" should be read again and again by every musical teacher and student (he talks about tempo, rhythm, phrasing, articulation and attitudes).
Of course, one must have the sheet music on hand to see what it's all about, and a mind-set ready to accept Scarlatti into the company of Chopin and Liszt as well as Granados and Alb�niz.
Kirkpatrick talks a little about the influence of Iberian song and dance forms on the sonatas of Scarlatti; a few others have scattered hints on this subject. I think the world would welcome a full-blown research here as a fitting sequel to this book.

Bedrock Scarlatti

Ralph Kirkpatrick's 1953 work remains THE book on Domenico Scarlatti and his keyboard sonatas. There have been no substantial revisions in the biography of DS since 1953. Georgio Pestelli and many others have questioned Kirkpatrick on chronology, but when it comes to analysis of individual sonatas, Kirkpatrick is strong. And his performances speak well even 50 years later. Kirkpatrick was not a musicologist, so his book is actually interesting to read!

Very Interesting

i enjoyed this ebook and thought it was quite interesting. it gives some great details of the origins and history of the people who will be involved in the God/Magog war, evidence of build up for the coming war, history of the different countries that will be part of the confederation and potential military attacks. he goes into great detail on what Ezekiel is saying and helps us to understand it in modern terms. it really helped me see and understand the different countries that will be involved, i learned a good bit. very, very interesting and a good read.
