About the Author

Richard Gargiulo is a professor of special education in the School of Education at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He received his Master's degree and PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1999, he was awarded the University's President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has also served as a Fulbright Scholar to the Czech Republic and has authored numerous books on the subjects of special education, early childhood education, and child abuse and neglect. He has been president of the Council for Exceptional Children and president of the Division on Autism and Development Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children.

Do not use electronic version as a class text book

The information in the book is presented well, clear, easy to understand. The book itself is good. My low review comes from the format. I bought the kindle version as a textbook for class, and for that purpose it is almost useless. There is no linked table of content, not page numbers, only the basic location feature. It works fine as a reference but is almost useless in class because it's almost impossible to find a specific location in the book. If your professor gives you an assignment to read pages 101-150, for example, you will need to find a print copy, see what is in the page, then scroll through the kindle book to find that location. Fix this and you'll have a great e-text book.

This book is a must-have for ANY teacher or prospective teacher. I am an English Education major but I am also a music teacher, and this book has provided me with wonderful insight for some of my students.

The key terms are bolded and off to one side, which is a bonus for any college student. The summaries at the end of each chapter are comprehensive and adequate. Not only that, but the book is extremely easy to read even if you don't understand things like Public Laws or state curriculum. It also provides additional resources for every single chapter.

Overall, well written, interesting and insightful. The price on Amazon is also very fair, you can't buy this cheaper anywhere else.

I bought this as a gift to my girlfriend's online class. She used this book during her online quizzes and she did quite well. She used it about 3 times a week and thought it had some good information. However, some of the questions posted on the online quiz was more appropriate for an earlier version. Regardless, it didn't have any effect and was still a good product.

Using declassified U.S. material and recently released KGB espionage documents, Rhodes provides a clear picture of U.S. research efforts from the late 1940s through the early 1950s and the nearly direct transfer of these results to the major Soviet research establishments through the efforts of Klaus Fuchs, the Rosenbergs, and many others. Even more fascinating is Rhodes's treatment of the role of the Strategic Air Command in the military mentality of the 1960s. With the conclusion of the Cold War, the breakup of the Soviet Union, and the current American concern about downsizing the military, there is much in this book worth serious consideration. Recommended.

A masterful account

This book is an excellent companion to the author’s absolutely classic, “The Making of the Atomic Bomb.” It is the next step in atomic history. Perhaps, even to quote Fermi, “it can be done; and almost certainly will be done.”

In that case; this book is an inevitability.

The book starts out with a survey of what happened at Los Alamos and the invention of the fission bomb. Rhodes goes into painstaking detail regarding the development of the bomb and atomic espionage. He links the communist party of The United States to the infiltration by the Soviet Union the bomb project.

Clearly there were enough holes in the system the Russians were nearly up to date on everything we knew and used that information to their advantage by taking years off their own bomb program.

The book continues in describing the debate regarding the fusion bomb. Some scientists felt it should be made in the national interest and yet others thought it was a disaster. They preferred science spends its time on making nuclear power work in a non-military fashion
Not only does the author do a fantastic job of showing this debate. But he also shows us how the US moved forward and eventually produced the first hydrogen bomb. He ultimately finishes the book by describing in detail the Cuban Missile Crisis and how close we came to mutually assured destruction.

Without a doubt this is not an easy read. It’s the kind of heavy book you might read in a major history class. You need to know something about physics, history, some politics as they relate to the history. If you happen to have a keen interest in Atomic History, then this book is clearly written for you.

Ultimately, the book was entirely enjoyable. I look forward to reading more books by author. His making of the atomic bomb book was required reading when I was in college and still remains on my book shelf. Somethings never get old.

Most excellent book! Also not recommended for those who hold a high opinion of humans.

Don't read if you want to sleep at night. We humans are just too clever for our own good. Me? I am just a curious person at heart and, yes, I sleep very poorly and nuclear weapons and trying to comprehend what they are, why they exist, and what kind of a warped creature would fashion them has obsessed me since my mid teens. This is the finest popular book on the subject...very detailed and very unnerving. Why would any god create such an animal as humans? Ha. It was natural selection. My problem, not being a physicist, is that I cannot manage to comprehend the amount of energy contained in matter. This book helps a bit on that. My answer so far is that to make dense matter requires a super nova.....and that that action of formation is reversible under very specific conditions. ( like in a nuclear bomb )

Remember, WARNING, do not read if you like sleeping. Read only if you want to know. Knowing is the finest thing available to a human mind by the way.

Mutual assured destruction still works...

Excellent book on a very difficult subject.

All five stars, highly recommended to everyone who wants to know what REALLY happened after the Russians exploded their bomb without much research, just copying stolen US documents.

That explosion in 1949 triggered the 'super bomb' research in the USA supported by some and bitterly opposed by others here but performed also mostly by Sakcharov in USSR without any hesitation.

The author writes explicitly about MAD, 'mutual assured destruction', that resulted from possession of hydrogen bombs by USA and USSR and, hopefully, still holds.

At the end of the book he adds his own comment that put some nuances on MAD. Some of them are obvious: US generals could speak quite 'freely', I doubt that the Russian generals could. Also, the newer nuclear powers, especially North Korea, is not a really a nuclear power and not likely to attack South Korea anytime soon (if ever).

The MAD still holds and appears to be an intrinsic part of the world history, that is history after the fission was discovered in 1939.

The author should be admired for his long and comprehensive work on this book.
