Napoleon Hill was born in 1883 in Virginia and died in 1970 after a long and successful career as a lecturer, an author, and as a consultant to business leaders. Think and Grow Rich is the all-time bestseller in its field, having sold 15 million copies worldwide, and sets the standard for today’s motivational thinking.

Allen was employed as a factory knitter and a private secretary until the early twentieth century, when he became increasingly known for his motivational writing. His 1903 work As a Man Thinketh earned him worldwide fame as a prophet of inspirational thinking and influenced a who's-who of self-help writers, including Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie, and Norman Vincent Peale. Allen died at age 47 in 1912.

WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH
YOUR WILL POWER by Russell H. Conwell

The Author is much indebted to Mr.Merle Crowell of the American Magazine who
assisted most efficiently in the preparation of the facts herein contained.

I.

Success has no secret. Her voice is forever ringing through the market-place and crying in the wilderness, and the burden of her cry is one word—WILL. Any normal young man who hears and heeds that cry is equipped fully to climb to the very heights of life.

The message I would like to leave with the young men and women of America is a message I have been trying humbly to deliver from lecture platform and pulpit for more than fifty years. It is a message the accuracy of which has been affirmed and reaffirmed in thousands of lives whose progress I have been privileged to watch. And the message is this:Your future stands before you like a block of unwrought marble. You can work it into what you will. Neither heredity, nor environment, nor any obstacles superimposed by man can keep you from marching straight through to success, provided you are guided by a firm, driving determination and have normal health and intelligence.

Determination is the battery that commands every road of life. It is the armor against which the missiles of adversity rattle harmlessly. If there is one thing I have tried peculiarly to do through these years it is to indent in the minds of the youth of America the living fact that when they give WILL the reins and say “DRIVE” they are headed toward the heights.

The institution out of which Temple University, of Philadelphia, grew was founded thirty years ago expressly to furnish opportunities for higher education to poor boys and girls who are willing to work for it. I have seen ninety thousand students enter its doors. A very large percentage of these came to Philadelphia without money, but firmly determined to get an education. I have never known one of them to go back defeated. Determination has the properties of a powerful acid; all shackles melt before it.

Conversely, lack of will power is the readiest weapon in the arsenal of failure. The most hopeless proposition in the world is the fellow who thinks that success is a door through which he will sometime stumble if he roams around long enough. Some men seem to expect ravens to feed them, the cruse of oil to remain inexhaustible, the fish to come right up over the side of the boat at meal-time.

They believe that life is a series of miracles. They loaf about and trust in their lucky star, and boldly declare that the world owes them a living.

As a matter of fact the world owes a man nothing that he does not earn. In this life a man gets about what he is worth, and he must render an equivalent for what is given him. There is no such thing as inactive success.

My mind is running back over the stories of thousands of boys and girls I have known and known about, who have faced every sort of a handicap and have won out solely by will and perseverance in working with all the power that God had given them. It is now nearly thirty years since a young English boy came into my office. He wanted to attend the evening classes at our university to learn oratory.

“Why don’t you go into the law?” I asked him.

“I’m too poor! I haven’t a chance!” he replied, shaking his head sadly.

I turned on him sharply. “Of course you haven’t a chance,” I exclaimed, “if you don’t make up your mind to it!”

The next night he knocked at my door again. His face was radiant and there was a light of determination in his eyes.

“I have decided to become a lawyer,” he said, and I knew from the ring of his voice that he meant it.

Many times after he became mayor of Philadelphia he must have looked back on that decision as the turning point in his life.

I am thinking of a young Connecticut farm lad who was given up by his teachers as too weak-minded to learn.

He left school when he was seven years old and toiled on his father’s farm until he was twenty-one. Then something turned his mind toward the origin and development of the animal kingdom. He began to read works on zoology, and, in order to enlarge his capacity for understanding, went back to school and picked up where he left off fourteen years before. Somebody said to him, “You can get to the top if you will!”

He grasped the hope and nurtured it, until at last it completely possessed him. He entered college at twenty-eight and worked his way through with the assistance that we were able to furnish him. To-day he is a respected professor of zoology in an Ohio college.

Such illustrations I could multiply indefinitely. Of all the boys whom I have tried to help through college I cannot think of a single one who has failed for any other reason than ill health. But of course I have never helped any one who was not first helping himself. As soon as a man determines the goal toward which he is marching, he is in a strategic position to see and seize everything that will contribute toward that end.

Whenever a young man tells me that if he “had his way” he would be a lawyer, or an engineer, or what not, I always reply:

“You can be what you will, provided that it is something the world will be demanding ten years hence.”

This brings to my mind a certain stipulation which the ambition of youth must recognize. You must invest yourself or your money in a known demand. You must select an occupation that is fitted to your own special genius and to some actual want of the people. Choose as early as possible what your life-work will be. Then you can be continually equipping yourself by reading and observing to a purpose. There are many things which the average boy or girl learns in school that could be learned outside just as well.

Almost any man should be able to become wealthy in this land of opulent opportunity. There are some people who think that to be pious they must be very poor and very dirty. They are wrong. Not money, but the love of money, is the root of all evil. Money in itself is a dynamic force for helping humanity.

In my lectures I have borne heavily on the fact that we are all walking over acres of diamonds and mines of gold.

There are people who think that their fortune lies in some far country. It is much more likely to lie right in their own back yards or on their front door-step, hidden from their unseeing eye. Most of our millionaires discovered their fortunes by simply looking around them.

Recently I have been investigating the lives of four thousand and forty-three American millionaires. All but twenty of them started life as poor boys, and all but forty of them have contributed largely to their communities, and divided fairly with their employees as they went along. But, alas, not one rich man’s son out of seventeen dies rich.

But if a man has dilly-dallied through a certain space of wasted years, can he then develop the character—the motor force—to drive him to success? Why, my friend, will power cannot only be developed, but it is often dry powder which needs only a match. Very frequently I think of the life of Abraham Lincoln—that wonderful man! and I am thankful that I was permitted to meet him. Yet Abraham Lincoln developed the splendid sinews of his

will after he was twenty-one. Before that he was just a roving, goodnatured sort of a chap. Always have I regretted that I failed to ask him what special circumstance broke the chrysalis of his life and loosened the wings of his will.

Many years ago some of the students of Temple University held a meeting in a building opposite the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel. As they were leaving the building they noticed a foreigner selling peanuts on the opposite curb. While buying peanuts they got to talking with the fellow, and told him that any one could obtain an education if he was willing to work for it. Eagerly the poor fellow drank up all the information he could get. He enrolled at Temple University and worked his way through, starting with the elementary studies. He is to-day an eminent practising physician in the national capital.

Often I think of an office clerk who reached a decision that the ambitions which were stirring in his soul could be realized if he could only get an education. He attended our evening classes and was graduated with a B.S. degree. He is now the millionaire head of one of the largest brokerage houses in the country.

“Where there’s a will there’s a way!” But one needs to use a little common sense about selecting the way. A general may determine to win a victory, but if he hurls his troops across an open field straight into the leaden sweep of the enemy’s artillery he invites disaster and defeat. The best general lays his plans carefully, and advances his troops in the way that will best conserve their strength and numbers. So must a man plan his campaign of life.

No man has a right, either for himself or for others, to be at work in a factory, or a store, or anywhere else, unless he would work there from choice—money or no money—if he had the necessities of life.

“As a man thinks, so he is,” says the writer of Proverbs; but as a man adjusts himself, so really is he, after all. One great trouble with many individuals is that they are made up of all sorts of machinery that is not adjusted, that is out of place—no belts on the wheels, no fire under the boiler, hence no steam to move the mechanism.

Some folk never take the trouble to size themselves up—to find out what they are fitted to do—and then wonder why they remain way down at the bottom of the heap. I remember a young woman who told me that she did not believe she could ever be of any particular use in the world. I mentioned a dozen things that she ought to be able to do.

“If you only knew yourself,” I said, “you would set yourself to writing. You ought to be an author.”

She shook her head and smiled, as if she thought I was making fun of her. Later, force of circumstances drove her to take up the pen. And when she came to me and told me that she was making three thousand dollars a year in literary work, and was soon to go higher, I thought back to the time when she was a poor girl making three dollars a week when she failed accurately to estimate herself.

Our Greatest Wealth-Building Tools Reside Within Us
By Sharon Michaels
How To Prosper In Hard Times is filled with time-tested wealth and prosperity building principles from some of the greatest motivational writers of all times. Authors include Napoleon Hill, George S. Clason, James Allen and others who have given us classic books on the subject of wealth building.

The subtitle says it all, Blueprints for Abundance by the Greatest Motivational Teachers of All Time. There couldn't be a better time in our recent economic history to release a more powerful compilation of wisdom on the subject of wealth building.

There is an underlying theme from all eight featured authors - thought and belief can either create your wealth or destroy your life. We have choices and it is the quality of the choices that creates our destiny. All the authors believe that affirming and visualizing abundance and prosperity were vital to achieving true wealth. Our greatest wealth-building tools reside deep within us - within our mind, heart and spirit of belief in a higher power.

I do have to tell you that these early writers mention The Devine, God and Higher Purpose in their writings. Some even quote the Bible. If this language or belief system offends you, then this book may not be for you. The language can be archaic at times and very gender specific. Read past that and gather the pearls of wisdom from each author - there is a powerful reason their writings have endured for all these decades.

Here is one of my favorites:

Joseph Murphy - Best known for his book, The Power of the Subconscious Mind writing about How To Attract Money

"Take this little phrase; repeat it slowly four or five minutes three or four times a day quietly to yourself; Money is forever circulating freely in my life, and there is always a Devine surplus."

Here is a book from authors whose works are as powerful today as when they were first written. How To Prosper In Hard Times is reading for financial mind and soul. There is true abundance and wealth wisdom between these 255 pages.

Prospering Now
By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca
The book teaches the most important step an
entrepreneur can take. This step is to over-deliver
on customer expectations and to do so for less money.
This is the not-so-well known aspect of successful retailing.
Next, grow a fat purse via savings. Remember your
economics which teaches that Savings = Investment.

Gratifications should be few in number to enhance savings.
Go light on life's difficulties so that you can carry
as little emotional baggage as possible. Money begets money
so put each coin to labor.

This book would be a good acquisition for a budding retailer
or entrepreneur looking to deliver value to the customer.

Farthest Field: An Indian Story of the Second World War, by Raghu Karnad

A brilliantly conceived nonfiction epic, a war narrated through the lives and deaths of a single family.

The photographs of three young men had stood in his grandmother’s house for as long as he could remember, beheld but never fully noticed. They had all fought in the Second World War, a fact that surprised him. Indians had never figured in his idea of the war, nor the war in his idea of India. One of them, Bobby, even looked a bit like him, but Raghu Karnad had not noticed until he was the same age as they were in their photo frames. Then he learned about the Parsi boy from the sleepy south Indian coast, so eager to follow his brothers-in-law into the colonial forces and onto the front line. Manek, dashing and confident, was a pilot with India’s fledgling air force; gentle Ganny became an army doctor in the arid North-West Frontier. Bobby’s pursuit would carry him as far as the deserts of Iraq and the green hell of the Burma battlefront.

The years 1939–45 might be the most revered, deplored, and replayed in modern history. Yet India’s extraordinary role has been concealed, from itself and from the world. In riveting prose, Karnad retrieves the story of a single family―a story of love, rebellion, loyalty, and uncertainty―and with it, the greater revelation that is India’s Second World War.

Farthest Field narrates the lost epic of India’s war, in which the largest volunteer army in history fought for the British Empire, even as its countrymen fought to be free of it. It carries us from Madras to Peshawar, Egypt to Burma―unfolding the saga of a young family amazed by their swiftly changing world and swept up in its violence.

Review
“[Farthest Field] is an exquisitely written memoir of the wartime lives of the young Indian journalist's grandfather and two great-uncles, and is so heart-stoppingly beautiful I want all around to read it.” (Simon Winchester - New York Times Book Review)

“Raghu Karnad's Farthest Field seemed at first to me a worthy new book, filling up the large blanks in the hegemonic Anglo-American view of World War II, part of a necessary excavation of suppressed and ignored histories. I wasn't prepared for its extraordinary aesthetic qualities and emotional power, as well as its serene mastery of outsize, intransigent material.” (Pankaj Mishra - New York Times Book Review)

“Like a superior commander himself, Karnad marshals and orders a huge range of materials, locations, and actions with apparently effortless skill, making everything cohere not only through a galloping and affecting narrative but, crucially, through a passionate moral core that repeatedly exposes the numerous ways in which Indians were treated as fodder by the Empire…. The writing of history intersects gloriously with several other genres in this moving, eloquent, intelligent work.” (Neel Mukherjee - Financial Times)

“[S]pectacular…. In prose that verges at times on poetry, he writes with the imaginative gift of a first-rate novelist in order to deliver the truth. Romance and the attendant grief of loss permeate the book alongside passages that are unexpectedly moving…. Unforgettable.” (Juliet Nicolson - Daily Telegraph)

“[Karnad’s] fascinating [book] is both a poignant memorial to his lost family and a gripping account of how India contributed to the allied victory and sowed the seeds of its independence.” (Ian Critchley - Sunday Times)

“From the very first page it is the brilliance of the writing that stands out…. It has the stamp of imaginative truth about it, and we can ask nothing more of any kind of writing.” (David Crane - Spectator)

“This book tells us that we all have two deaths: when we die and when we are forgotten. But there is a possibility of two births, the second being re-created in an extraordinary book. This is one of those rare books that bring people alive again. It has been written with imagination and is engrossing to read.” (Michael Holroyd)

An Embarrassment of Riches
By D B S Lakshmi
By D.B.S. Lakshmi

I use the phrase 'an embarrassment of riches' in the sense that there is such a wealth of charged, evocative prose to discover here, that it becomes difficult to choose the best from the rest. In Farthest Field: an Indian Story of the Second World War, Raghu Karnad artfully steers the stories of three close family members (doctor/grandfather Ganny and two grand-uncles, IAF pilot Manek and engineer-officer Bobby, who all died in the war and whom the author knows only from old photographs and others’ remembrances) to the history of the hundreds of thousands of forgottens who fought on the wrong (British) side in theatres of war stretching from Africa to Arabia to Asia at a time when India itself was in the thick of fighting the British for independence.

This sweeping narrative pauses to capture closer-ups of better-documented events and soldiers of war: With Madras under threat, the Police Commissioner orders a platoon to evacuate the zoo by shooting the lions and tigers and the lone polar bear; the jemadar and the Indian sappers in Eritrea who have a window of 50 seconds to emerge from behind their barricade and set explosive charges to blow up the Italians’ boulder blocks – 50 seconds being the time it took for old-fashioned guns to reload; the Sikh jemadar (who survived the massacre at Gazala) recounting rumours of Black Magician Rommel’s enchanted command vehicle (‘ The Elephant’) which could fly over minefields and a death ray weapon that could wipe out full battalions; in Kohima, the British lieutenant and the lance naik who blow up a bakery sheltering Japanese soldiers with a torn away hospital door pasted with gun cotton and plugged with detonator and fuse; the brave gurkha soldier fallen by the Chindwin river who singlehandedly holds off 10 attackers but who is saved just in time by strafing from Manek’s IAF squadron; and a further variety of heroic tales… even one of debrayed mules who are ‘half-warriors, half-carriers’.

Still, were I to pick favourites, it would be the Eastern chapters and within that the triumphant defence of Kohima, as Bobby Mugaseth who having yearned to prove himself a ‘real’ soldier like family and friends, comes face to face with the war a full year after becoming a commissioned officer in the Bengal Sappers:

“Out here on the green baize of the Naga Hills, the gods were rolling dice for men’s lives and limbs. Each day the brigade brought in its dead, Jat Sikhs, Hazarawals, Punjabi Mussalmans – to be burned or buried in the wilderness. At any moment, Bobby could fall to the snap of a bullet or the sighing arrival of a mortar shell.
“In the evenings the wind towed clouds over the ridges… through a blindfold of rain, Bobby first heard then saw the white bursts spouting from the blue shadow beyond the wire. His mind emptied of thoughts it had been working on the instant before, of the words on his lips. As the roar of voices and gunshots rose around him, his life behind him went dark…
“He sat down hard and for a minute, or how long he didn’t know, he only sat. He watched the battle and he could see himself watching the battle and then for a moment saw someone else, far away and in the future, watching him watch himself at this moment”… Someone else, and now us too.

A poignant and moving read
By K Murthy
'Farthest Field by Raghu Karnad -- novelistic non-fiction, history and biography -- reconstructs the lives and stories of his own family -- his grandmother, her sisters, a brother, their lives and loves, and the journeys that took the men from their homes to distant battlefields as soldiers in the second World War at the crux of India's Independence.''

What we learn is not only that Indians were in the second World War, but what it means for Indians to have been in that war. Consigned to a fate of death and obscurity, these soldiers were sent by the British to fight in the name of the crown, even as the battle for independence and freedom from British rule waged on in India. History has made few attempts to dig them up again, so it is refreshing to witness a writer of Karnad's calibre attempt the undertaking.

The book is heart-stopping at moments, sharp and full of edges and revelations that hint at other neglected histories of unknown Indians and the Second World War. To have crafted the story of the personal loss in his family and through it discover the historical at this scale can only have been done by intelligent and sensitive writing, and Karnad manages this beautifully.

'The forgotten War..revived
By royal_guju
lthough you won’t get an idea of it from following the commemorations of the two world wars in Britain, a large part of the manpower of the British empire’s armies came from its colonies. Cicero referred to money, the sinews of war; in a more literal sense, Indian soldiers formed the sinews of the British empire’s global conflicts, from the opium wars in the mid-19th century to, say, the securing of Basra in 1914 (and again in 1941).
By the end of the second world war more than 2.5m men served in the Indian army, making it the largest volunteer force in world history. Yet they were treated worse than second-class humans and Winston Churchill was adamant about not giving India her independence, which the Indian National Congress had demanded as a requisite for India providing the men Britain so desperately needed to fight. President Franklin Roosevelt was keenly aware of the systemic double standards involved: Europe was facing the biggest threat to the very freedom it wouldn’t consider for other races.
The unwritten, expunged and marginalised lesser people, written out of white histories, are now making a comeback — from Amitav Ghosh’s Ibis trilogy to Madhusree Mukerjee’s Churchill’s Secret War (2010), which documented the shameful role played by the British prime minister during the 1943 Bengal famine in which 3m Indians died, a growing literature is filling out what has been a woefully skewed picture.
Into this context steps the Indian journalist Raghu Karnad, whose debut history Farthest Field focuses on the trajectories of three related Indian men’s lives during the second world war. Karnad opens up the story to take in the great theatres of the war — Singapore, Eritrea, Libya, El Alamein, Basra, Arakan, Imphal — but this is a narrative in which public and private are always interlaced: we will discover that his maternal grandfather, Kodandera Ganapathy (“Ganny”), is part of the trio. Ganny marries Nurgesh Mugaseth (“Nugs”), one of four siblings — three daughters (Subur, Nugs and Khorshed) and one son (Godrej, aka Bobby) — from a prosperous industrial Parsi family based in Calicut in southern India. Khorshed (“Kosh”) marries a dashing daredevil, Manek Dadabhoy. Karnad’s book is the story of these three friends, Ganny, Bobby and Manek, brothers-in-law and brothers-in-arms, Bobby and Manek
Ganny, a doctor, is recruited by the Indian Medical Service and sent to the Combined Military Hospital in Thal in July 1942. Within five months, he is dead, from asthmatic bronchitis, at the age of 26; he did not live to see the birth of his daughter. Unlike Ganny, Manek, an officer in the Indian Air Force, sees real action in the war: he is sent to Burma... He dies inside Indian lines in May 1943, his plane coming down while returning to base through thick monsoon cloud.
Bobby, an engineer, joins the Bengal Sappers under the 161st Indian Infantry Brigade. More than a year after his commission, Bobby, who “regard[s] his life as an anti-suspense novel: How will our hero escape his monotonous safety, and find his way to danger?”, is sent to the dreaded North-East Frontier as the army plans a full offensive against the Japanese to prevent their entry into India. In a bravura feat of literary-historical imagination — the kind that one would normally associate with a novelist — Karnad recreates the Imphal-Kohima front, filling out the lacunae in the story of how Bobby meets his end in November 1944.
Like a Comissioned Office himself, Karnad marshals and orders a huge range of materials, locations and actions with apparently effortless skill, making everything coheret not only through a galloping and affecting narrative but, crucially, through a passionate moral core that repeatedly exposes the numerous ways in which Indians were treated as fodder by the Empire. It seems reasonable to conclude that Karnad has been inspired to investigate his family’s recent past by this moral impulse to balance the history books; that inextricability of the public and private again.
In closing, a great read and can hardly wait for the next book by this emerging writer

Very useful book!
By Daniel Kester
I took this book with me on a recent (May 2013) trip to Poland. My main interest was visiting Holocaust sites, and this book was invaluable. It covers all the major camps (Auschwitz, Treblinka, Belzec, Sobibor, Majdanek) as well as many lesser known ones such as Chelmno, Trawniki, and Izbica. In addition to the camps, it covers many of the cities that were important Jewish population centers: Warsaw, Krakow, Lodz, Lublin, Zamosc, among others.

For each site the author discusses the history of the place, what happened there, travel information (i.e. how to get there, hours, website), and what to see when there. He includes a level of detail that would be hard to find elsewhere. For example, in the city of Lublin I was able to find the building, now a school, where the administration of the Holocaust in Poland took place, the building where the railroad offices where (from where bureaucrats arranged to send a couple million people to death camps), and even found out that my hotel had been the headquarters of the German civil administration. This is in addition to the major pre-war Jewish sites. I found a similar level of detail in the many other places that I visited. Since many of the Holocaust related places in Poland have little or no posted information, this book became my "tour guide."

I have not found any other in-print book that focuses on travel to Holocaust sites. So for anyone interested in this, this book is definitely worth getting.

My only complaint is that the book could have used more maps. For many places directions are given through text, where a map would have been much more useful.

On my Poland trip I also had along Martin Gilbert's excellent book, Holocaust Journey, which describes a trip he took through Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany. The Gilbert book had many more maps, plus it included many smaller places not covered by Winstone. However it only includes places that Gilbert visited; the Winstone book is far more complete, plus it covers all of Europe. But for visiting Poland, I would highly recommend having both books along.

Well Done
By Jan Ruth Mills
I'm pleased to see that Mr. Winstone includes information about KZ Gusen I, II, and III in his guide. Visitors should know that since publication of Mr. Winstone's book, after much effort by the local KZ Gusen Memorial Committee in cooperation with survivors and liberators, the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior recently agreed to preserve a portion of the Bergkristall tunnels and make them open to the public. Mr. Winstone's description of the camps and of Christoph Mayer's Audiowalk will hopefully encourage visitors to Mauthausen take the very brief trip to learn more about these camps, as well.

While the Visitors' Center and the opening of a portion of the Bergristall tunnels marks a victory for those who have labored to preserve the history of these camps, the Federal Ministry of the Interior is allowing other remnants of this camp system to be destroyed or neglected. The giant stone crusher, the largest in Europe at the time, remains in private hands and the SS administrative buildings (which would be a better site for further commemorative activities as well as a more generous space for seminars and lectures than the tiny Visitor's Center or the local Catholic parish house that are now used), are being destroyed.

Those who would like to help preserve these important artifacts of Nazi terror should write letters, make phone calls, and write e-mails to the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior. To learn more about the history of these camps, one could visit the KZ Gusen Memorial Committee Website or the KZ Gusen Memorial Committee Digital Archive.

Mind Platter, by Najwa Zebian

Mind Platter is a compilation of reflections on life through the eyes of an educator, student and human who experienced most of life in silence. It is written in the words of a person who came from Lebanon to Canada at the age of sixteen and experienced what it was like to have fate push you to a place where you don't belong. It is written in the voice of every person who ever felt unheard, mistreated, misjudged or unseen. Mind Platter contains around 200 one-page entries as reflections on different topics that we encounter in our everyday lives; love, friendship, hurt, inspiration, respect, wholeheartedness, motivation, integrity, honesty and more. Mind Platter is not about the words that are in it, but about what the reader makes of them. This book does not only belong to me. It belongs to everyone whose path crossed mine. Had my journey not have been what it was, with every story and every detail, I would not be the same person today. May this book give a voice to those who need one, be a crying shoulder for those who need someone to listen, and inspire those who need a reminder of the power that they have over their lives.

I simply fell in love with this book
By Amazon Customer
I simply fell in love with this book, after being introduced to this author on Instagram. The words that this author brings to paper, are the ones that normal people (like me and you) are unable to put into words even though we may be feeling and thinking about them. Reading this book made me feel like I had come home; that I had been given the privilege to meet with a like-minded mind, who really GETS you.
This book is brilliant.
If you are hesitating, just buy it.

Review
'I've read plenty of the BFI's excellent Film Classic series, but Tom Kemper's take on Toy Story is up there among the very best.' - The Crack Magazine 'One of the many praiseworthy things about the BFI's Film Classics series is that it has not shafted animation...Toy Story inspired so many [animated films] as to be genre-defining, so it is often easy to lose sight of what made the film stand out on its first release twenty years ago. With Toy Story: A Critical Reading, Kemper has given the film the in-depth analysis it deserves.' - Cartoon Brew 'A masterpiece of film criticism' - Toronto Film Review 'Tom Kemper's new critical monograph on Toy Story stands out from its fellows in the British Film Institute's Film Classics series not only in its choice of subject - a beloved and massively successful children's film, as opposed to the established classics or "cutting-edge" modern films typically featured in the series - but in the sophistication and persuasiveness of its argument. Kemper offers a wealth of insight on this foundational film in the Pixar canon, contextualizes it within the history of animated films and the pictorial arts, and highlights the film's surrealist touches. Most importantly, it accomplishes what any good single-film monograph should do: make you want to go out and watch (or re-watch) the film immediately.' - David Davison, Toronto International Film Festival

About the Author
Tom Kemper is Lecturer at the School of Cinematic Arts, University of Southern California and Teacher at the Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences, USA. He is the author of Hidden Talent: The Emergence of Hollywood Agents (2009).
