About the Author

Vivian H. Heyward, PhD, is a Regents professor emerita at the University of New Mexico, where she taught physical fitness assessment and exercise prescription courses for 26 years. In addition to the previous editions of this book, she has authored two editions of Applied Body Composition Assessment (Human Kinetics, 1996, 2004) as well as numerous articles in research and professional journals dealing with various aspects of physical fitness assessment and exercise prescription. Heyward has received many professional awards, including Distinguished Alumni Awards from the University of Illinois and the State University of New York at Cortland and the SWACSM Recognition Award for distinguished professional service and achievement.

In her free time, she enjoys hiking, nature photography, golfing, and snowshoeing. Heyward resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Ann L. Gibson, PhD, is an associate professor and researcher in exercise science at the University of New Mexico, with research interests in body composition and physiological responses to exercise. She developed the ancillary materials for the sixth edition of Advanced Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription in addition to coauthoring the seventh edition.

Gibson has presented internationally in the area of obesity research. She has also published original research in journals such as Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, International Journal of Sport Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, and The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Gibson resides in New Mexico, where she enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, biking, climbing, cross-country skiing, and gardening.

Great book and not too "Advanced"

Excellent text as was the earlier edition. I am bemused that this book has received one and two star reviews ..

Beginning with an overview of the importance of physical activity for health (and the prevention /maintenance of chronic medical conditions), this book proceeds through the continuum of exercise prescription from preliminary health screening to designing programs for the individual components of health-fitness.

The book is methodical without ever becoming tedious, and contains information based on the latest scientific research. Although labelled "Advanced", in my opinion it would be suited to both 'thinking' undergraduate and post-graduate study, or as I use it - an excellent reference source.

I have not accessed the online videos so I cannot comment on them but the book alone has been a worthwhile purchase and I typically refer to something in it at leas weekly and frequently more often.

PS this is my "go-to" reference for general exercise prescription (aerobic, resistance, flexibility etc). If you are looking for something more specific to resistance training, I'd suggest the Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning - 3rd Edition (I have both).

The book is okay, but there are no page numbers. This makes it very difficult in class to find the page the teacher is on. If there is something I'm missing here, please let me know. If this is just how it is, I will be returning the e-book. It gets three stars due to the inability to use this in an educational setting.

'This is a book that even the most confirmed qualitative researcher can highly recommend to students. And for any course in quantitative methods it would be my first choice. The clear and interesting communicative style draws in the reader both to an understanding of some of the basis building blocks of quantitative research but also to some of answers to critiques of certain ways of using statistics. Those wanting just to be able to understand quantitative research as well as the statistically unsure wanting to use it are unlikely to be disappointed. Professor Daniel Muijs is Chair of Education. Previously he worked at the University of Manchester as Chair of Pedagogy and Teacher Development at the University of Manchester, School of Education, as Chair of School Leadership and Management at the University of Newcastle and as senior at Warwick Institute of Education. He is an acknowledged expert in the field of Educational and Teacher Effectiveness and is co-editor of the journal ‘School Effectiveness and School Improvement’. Finally: Stats for beginners, with SPSS

At last, a book that not only explains statistics for educational research clearly, accurately and accessibly, but also gives step-by-step instructions - with screen shots - for how to carry out each procedure using SPSS. Muijs' book is a must-have for every education major, as well as for arts graduates doing postgraduate qualifications in education. I will be using it this year to introduce my postgrads, most of whom have backgrounds in the arts, to the stats they need for their courses; and I'll urge them to buy their own copies. This will not only give them a ready reference book, but will also, I'm sure, reduce significantly the numbers of anguished emails and last-minute one-to-one tutorials I succumb to in the frantic fortnight before term papers are due. Academic text or personal expression?

Though I enjoyed this book, I'm not sure most people are ready for Ward's obvious folding-in of her personal and political beliefs into this thorough work on the experiences of women.
Ward's writing on the work women do and on the wide variety of gender issues explained in the book is certainly interesting and edifying. However, her seemingly definitive pronouncements on political and social matters are at times given without explanation or evidence. In our changing world, some of the "truths" about male/female relationships in our society she takes as a matter of course are holding less and less water. Those familiar with issues in the anthropology of gender, while they may agree with her, will find places where evidence that supports her conclusions is amplified while that which doesn't is minimized or omitted.
Despite her conviction otherwise, I don't agree with her that it's possible to express one's personal opinion in such an otherwise academic context. Inevitably, one is cheapened by the other. That said, the book itself is quite interesting as a look into gender issues in anthropology and the viewpoints of both herself and other greats in the sub-field, like Mead & Benedict. Perhaps my wish though was simply for a more academically rigorous treatment.

Comprehensive!

I was assigned this text for my first women's studies course and I couldn't have been happier with the professor's decision. Reading it was easy and interesting. The language used is simple, to the point and keeps the reader's attention. The concepts discussed are relevant, current and worth learning more about. I stepped away from this book having gained a different world view.

Lots of references to the work of Elizabeth Barber and connections to fabric. For someone with a textile background it provides even more "click" moments. Easily readable and packed with information it is a must read for anyone interested in the fields of Women's Studies and Anthropology.

Along with his role as a speaker and mentor to those seeking help with substance abuse, Jude works at Bridgeway Behavioral Health in St. Louis assisting addicts as they begin the treatment process.

Just when you think someone's hit rock bottom...

This book is a gut wrenching page turner. Could not put it down. It of course speaks to YA readers who will no doubt relate to the difficulty of struggling to fit in and the pains of peer pressure, but also to the parents, friends, and victims of anyone who has faced addiction. I would consider using this book as a tool to reach reluctant readers and at risk students, or for anyone looking for something with a little edge-and a big old dose of harsh reality.

Stands out among books about addiction

I was particularly interested in this book because it is written by someone who lives in the area where I live and where the heroin epidemic has personally touched our family. It was extremely well-written, honest and hard to put down. I agree with other reviewers that say it should serve as a tool for teaching people about the dangers of drug use and especially how experimentation can easily lead to full blown addiction in no time. If Hasaan, who had a stable,loving family and even a drug-counselor Father, was not immune then surely no one is and we must all be vigilant in our efforts to stop young people from going down this dangerous path. I am very thankful that Hasaan has shared his story and is working to publicize the dangers of drug use. The only thing lacking in this book is more detail about his recovery journey. I felt a bit jolted when he suddenly jumped from his rock bottom moment to his romance with his wife. While he definitely showed that relapse is almost inevitable, I would like to hear more about his recovery after he was determined to never go down the path of drug use again. For those of us still waiting and hoping that our loved ones get to that point, it would be helpful to hear how he made it through to be where he is today. Thank you Jude Hasaan for writing this book. It is truly a gift to all of those touched by addiction and I believe it will help many people in their recoveries as well as prevent some from ever even considering drug use.

Purchased for my son hoping he would read more because he loves Messi. At first he didn't seem interested when I gave it to him but once he started reading it he loved it. He read half the book in one day. He says says he wants all the books from this series. Easy reading.

My son's teacher requires him to read 45 minutes every night so I picked out this book. My son is a soccer fanatic and loves Messi. Reading this book is a lot of fun and is very interesting. Perfect for elementary school kids.
